Solar roof: How much can a roof photovoltaic system cost?

Anyone who has ever thought about the question will get many different answers.

Every offer that lands in the customer's mailbox upon request is like a surprise egg. They are usually quite different in terms of content and, above all, hardly comparable. There is no intention or malice behind it, because every installer and/or solar engineer has his own philosophy and idea of ​​an optimal roof PV system.

Unfortunately, this often means that the needs and requirements of customers have to be “made to fit and bent” with the philosophy and ideas of the provider about sales. This is not smooth and usually not in the customer's interest.

And because the market is currently booming, it is also attracting providers who work on this part-time or part-time and, due to a lack of experience and knowledge, can only offer what the solar company currently has in stock for which the external sales team actually works. Ultimately, it's always about the commission and what you can earn from it. This is also legitimate, but not always in the interests of the customers.

Even if the respective offers are difficult to compare, there are a few points that you can pay attention to and explain why these price differences exist.

Every offer has its justification. It always becomes difficult when you realize afterwards that you didn't know that and that you assumed something else. Therefore, objective and independent advice with comprehensive foresight is always recommended. Because it is precisely in an open conversation that new knowledge can be gained - for both sides.

We are talking about projects starting at 10,000 euros and well beyond that. That's a lot of money. Not only competence but also trust plays an important role.

Currently I can identify four (approximate) price levels on the market. This refers to a PV roof system with 10 kWp and electricity storage: €10,000, €26,000, €32,000 and €42,000. All net prices or with 0% VAT.

With such large price differences, everyone has to critically question what exactly is behind them. Can that be true?

I want to get to the point: there are no bargain prices simply due to the current market situation. At first glance, €10,000 seems affordable and cheap. Others suspect there is a catch here. Both sides are right.

A direct comparison of the systems is generally difficult. However, they can be a guide as to whether someone is completely overpriced or a little too cheap, where the devil is in the details.

Here are the current offers available:

• €36,000 for a 10 kWp system with suitable electricity storage
• €30,000 for an 8.0 kWp system with suitable electricity storage
• €24,000 for a 6.6 kWp system with suitable electricity storage

Here is a rough overview of the respective price levels for a PV roof system with 10 kWp and electricity storage as an example , which only gives an approximate insight and is not complete. The purpose of the list is to raise awareness and help customers understand the price segment they are in and their own ideas and requirements.

A) €10,000 PV system

Systems worth €10,000 are usually package offers, without installation and without electricity storage. The main components are the substructure and the inverter. Generally the products are of ok quality. Very suitable for projects with self-assembly, taking into account that the building law requirements must be adhered to and acceptance requires a master electrician.

B) €26,000 PV system

With PV system offers around €26,000, everything seems to be included: solar modules, hybrid inverters, power storage and installation. The difference to the following offers lies in the details. In most cases, the legally required scaffolding for installation is missing, which must be provided by the customer. The term “on-site” is mistakenly interpreted by laypeople to mean that the construction company takes on the relevant work. However, exactly the opposite is the case. The builder (client) has to arrange this himself.

➡️ Such offers are mainly offered by smaller one to five-man companies. In general, accessibility, order processing, technical support and after-sales also need to be questioned here.

C) €32,000 PV system

Actually everything as under point B). What is interesting here is that these are mostly products with a longer or extended warranty period. Scaffolding is also available. This includes project planning, advance registration with the responsible network operator, network management and registration to the low-voltage network as standard.

D) €42,000 PV system

In fact, there is more! Generally “Made in Germany”, maximum security with minimal risk: investment protection, product and assembly guarantee. Here’s to everything 20 years! Waiver of advance payment. Payment only after the contractual service has been provided. No glass-film modules are used, but rather high-quality glass-glass modules with excellent low-light behavior, to name just one other qualitatively important point. The in-house memory production offers additional added value.

What are the advantages of investing more in photovoltaic systems than in cheaper systems?

The far longer guarantee periods and extended guarantee services are intended not only to minimize the investment risk, but also to reflect the high quality of the service and products.

By using high-performance double-glass modules, the aging process is slowed down, in contrast to common glass-film modules, because glass is known to hardly age.

This longevity of the modules means that the photovoltaic system can also be used to generate solar power for longer. The return increases.

In contrast, glass film modules only have a glass pane on the front. There is a very thin film on the back, which makes the modules more susceptible to signs of aging.

In general, modules differ in their performance. Modules with higher efficiency and excellent low-light behavior are priced higher, but over time they provide more performance and therefore a higher return.
