Native video continues to be the type of web content that performs best on Facebook, garnering the most engagement among top posts and generating more shares than any other content format, according to research from social media analytics company NewsWhip .

Among the 10,000 most engaged Facebook posts, native videos and photos generated an average of 114,000 interactions between likes, comments, and shares. Both formats far outperformed live video and links, which were in a completely different league. A typical top post with a live video or link would garner around 100,000 actions. While both native video and photo were able to attract users to their posts, native video produced the largest number of shares on average compared to photos, links or live videos, making the format an important tool for amplifying content across different networks might.

In general, engagement on Facebook content increased around 55 percent year-over-year when NewsWhip compared interactions on the social network between the first part of 2018 and the first part of 2019. Facebook pages that performed best were either meme or community-focused pages that focused on cooking or self-help activities. Traditional publishers have had a hard time getting the same level of engagement with their sites. Fox News was the only publisher in the top 10 rankings for page engagement and CNN was the only other publisher in the top 15.
