Online marketplaces: eBay ranks 5th among digital sales platforms
eBay has been around since 1995. The US company was probably the largest online marketplace in the world until the 10s. However, it is now only enough for fifth place, as an eCommerceDB analysis of the top 100 marketplaces shows. What's more: In contrast to all of the other top 5 platforms, eBay's gross merchandise value (GMV) declined in 2019. The clear winner is Alibaba, which has almost a trillion US dollars in GMV in 2019 with its platforms Taobao and Tmall. Amazon's marketplace comes in third with almost $400 billion, ahead of JD.com ($301.9 billion).
