🌞🍎 Sun-kissed: Agri-photovoltaics at the Vollmer fruit farm

🍏🚜🌞 An innovative agri-photovoltaic system has been operating for almost a year at the Vollmer fruit farm in Oberkirch-Nußbach. It covers an area of approximately 1.5 hectares and is mounted on a three-meter-high steel structure. This system supports the cultivation of apples, plums, pears, and blackberries, offering the dual advantage of protecting the fruit from the elements while simultaneously generating electricity without sacrificing agricultural land.

🔄🌞 Movable modules for maximum yield

A standout feature of this system is its mobility and sensor-based control. Half of the installed PV modules track the sun's position to maximize energy yield. The other half is programmed to adjust to the plants' light requirements, thus promoting optimal growth.

🔧👷‍♂️ Engineering from Kehl

This sophisticated system was developed and built by Intech Clean Energy. The company, based in Kehl in the Ortenau district, was founded over 20 years ago by Hansjörg Vollmer and is now managed by his son Christoph Vollmer.

⚡🌿 Synergies between agriculture and energy

The agri-PV plant is part of the "Model Region Agri-PV" research project of the state of Baden-Württemberg, which aims to investigate and optimize the synergies between energy production and agriculture. The official inauguration of the plant was also attended by the Baden-Württemberg State Secretary for the Environment, Andre Baumann, who praised the innovative combination of agriculture and renewable energy.

📊🔬 Research objectives and initial results

The central aim of the project is to analyze both the energy and fruit yield of the system. The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) in Freiburg is responsible for evaluating the generated electricity, while the Augustenberg Agricultural Technology Center (LTZ) near Karlsruhe is investigating the development of the fruit beneath the PV modules.

🌡️🍏 Positive observations after the first year

Positive observations were made after just the first year. Researchers from the LTZ (Agricultural Technology Center) regularly visit the orchard and have found that temperature fluctuations under the modules are lower than in the reference plots without modules. This has resulted in more marketable apples, as Greta Ott from the LTZ explained. Although no significant differences have yet been observed with regard to diseases or pests, further years of research are needed to obtain reliable results.

🌳🍑 On-site experiences and observations

Hansjörg Vollmer himself also observed significant differences compared to his reference plots. The soil beneath the PV modules proved to be looser in the summer and did not dry out as quickly. Furthermore, the plants' leaves were greener and more vibrant. A particularly noticeable difference was observed in the plums. These fruits, grown under the modules, were not exposed to heat stress and were therefore more resilient. Regarding the apples, he noted that although they could be harvested a week later, they did not suffer from sunburn or hail damage.

🌟⚖️ A win-win situation for agriculture and energy

The agrivoltaic system at the Vollmer fruit farm thus represents a win-win situation, contributing to energy production while also increasing fruit yield. The PV modules protect the fruit from heavy rain, hail, and intense sunlight, and also ensure a more even temperature distribution, which improves the quality of the harvest.

🚜🌲 Potential for the future of agriculture

This technology shows great potential for the future of agriculture. By using agri-PV systems, farmers can not only increase their yields but also reduce their dependence on conventional energy sources. Furthermore, this dual use of land offers ecological benefits by making land use more efficient and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

📈🌐 Model region and global perspectives

The success of the project in Oberkirch-Nußbach could serve as a model for other regions, especially those suffering from extreme weather conditions or using large areas for fruit and vegetable cultivation. The scalability and adaptability of this technology could make it possible to implement similar systems worldwide to promote both agricultural production and sustainable energy generation.

📚🌱 Awareness raising and government funding

Furthermore, innovative technologies such as agri-PV could help raise awareness of the integration of renewable energies into traditional agricultural practices. Government support programs and subsidies could further promote the use of such systems, thereby supporting more environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture.

🔬🏫 Research and Education

Furthermore, agri-PV technology also offers a research and educational aspect. The involvement of scientific and research institutions such as the Fraunhofer ISE and the LTZ allows for the acquisition of further insights that contribute to the improvement and optimization of these systems. The exchange of knowledge and collaboration between farmers, scientists, and engineers are crucial to fully realizing the potential of this technology.

🌍🌿 Contribution to global challenges

Overall, the agri-PV system at the Vollmer fruit farm impressively demonstrates how innovative technologies can contribute to addressing global challenges in agriculture and energy production. It represents a forward-looking solution that improves the quality of life and economic situation of farmers while simultaneously making a significant contribution to environmental protection. Further research and development of such systems can make the agriculture of the future more sustainable and resilient, enabling it to successfully meet the challenges of climate change and a growing global population.

☀️🌿 Agri-photovoltaics: A win-win solution for fruit growing

🌞 Protection from sunburn and additional yields through agri-PV modules

Agriculture faces a multitude of challenges. Extreme weather events such as heat waves, torrential rain, and hail regularly threaten harvests and severely damage plants. Sunburn is particularly widespread in fruit growing, as the fruit is damaged by direct sunlight. Here, agri-photovoltaics (agri-PV) can offer an innovative solution that not only protects plants but also simultaneously provides renewable energy.

Hansjörg Vollmer, a part-time farmer from Oberkirch-Nußbach, has already had positive experiences with agri-PV. On his orchard, he uses solar panels installed above the plants. These panels offer a dual benefit: they not only generate electricity but also protect the plants from excessive sunlight. "We had a very consistent yield and not a single sunburned apple," Vollmer reports proudly, adding that sunburn did occur on the apples in the control plot without the panels.

🌱 Improved soil condition and healthier plants

The positive effects of agrivoltaic modules extend beyond sunburn protection. Vollmer observed that the soil on his fields remained looser in summer and did not dry out as quickly. These observations can be attributed to the shade cast by the solar panels, which reduces direct sunlight on the soil and thus lowers evaporation. The plants themselves also showed improved health. Vollmer reported that the leaves appeared greener and more vibrant than in the unprotected area.

A significant difference was observed, particularly with delicate fruits like plums. The plums under cover were not exposed to heat stress and therefore showed better recovery and development. The apples also benefited from the cover, although they were harvested a week later. "They didn't suffer from sunburn, and there was no hail damage either," the farmer explained.

🍎 Causes of sunburn on apples

Sunburn in apples occurs primarily due to extreme heat and intense sunlight. High-energy UV-B radiation plays a significant role. When the temperature on the fruit surface rises above 52 degrees Celsius, sunburn necrosis develops. This damage is caused by the heat and is independent of the intensity of the sunlight. High temperatures lead to the coagulation of proteins in the fruit, which destroys the cells. This results in browning and the collapse of cell layers – necrosis occurs, which can become corky or begin to rot due to fungal spore infestation.

Sunburn-like browning is also frequently observed in apple cultivation. This occurs when the surface temperature exceeds 46 degrees Celsius in combination with increased sunlight. The damaged area can spread across the fruit's surface and even affect the flesh during storage.

Another form of damage is photo-oxidation, which is triggered by intense radiation. This can even occur at low temperatures if there are sudden and extreme fluctuations in light and temperature intensity. This results in damage that is less dependent on temperature and more dependent on light intensity.

🛡️ Agri-PV as a protection mechanism

Agrivoltaic systems offer a solution to these diverse problems. By covering the plants with semi-transparent solar modules, several advantages can be realized simultaneously. In addition to generating solar power, the modules protect the plants from excessive sunlight and heat stress. At the same time, they provide protection from heavy rain and hail damage, which is particularly important in times of increasingly extreme weather events.

This protective effect of the agri-PV modules also explains the improved soil structure and healthier plants observed by Hansjörg Vollmer. Reduced heat stress and evaporation contribute to the plants being less susceptible to damage and disease. The soil remains moist and loose for longer, which improves root growth and nutrient uptake.

💰 Economic benefits of agri-PV

In addition to agronomic benefits, agri-PV systems also offer economic incentives. The solar energy generated can either be used directly on the farm or fed into the public grid. This creates additional revenue streams for farmers, contributing to the economic stability and security of their operations. This dual use of land – agricultural production and energy generation – makes agri-PV a particularly efficient and sustainable solution.

🔮 Future prospects and further developments

While the application of agrivoltaics is still in its infancy, the results so far are promising. Future developments could focus on optimizing the modules and integrating them into various cultivation systems. For example, semi-transparent modules could be further developed to better control light transmission and optimally adapt it to the needs of the respective plants.

Combining agri-PV with other sustainable farming techniques, such as drip irrigation or the use of ground cover, could further increase the efficiency and benefits of agri-PV. Ongoing research and pilot projects will systematically expand and improve practical experience.

⚙️ Challenges and solutions

Despite the numerous advantages, there are also challenges that must be considered when implementing agri-PV systems. Investment costs are often high, and planning and installation require specialized expertise. Furthermore, locations must be carefully selected and adapted to ensure a balance between agricultural use and energy production.

Funding programs and financial incentives could help by reducing initial investments and facilitating access to these technologies. Knowledge transfer and training for farmers also play a crucial role in increasing the acceptance and use of agri-PV.

🔍 The combination of solar power generation and plant protection

Agri-photovoltaics offers a promising solution to the challenges of modern fruit growing. The combination of solar power generation and crop protection leads to numerous advantages that are both ecologically and economically relevant. By using agri-PV, farmers like Hansjörg Vollmer can secure their yields, improve plant health, and simultaneously contribute to sustainable energy production.

The positive feedback and observed effects underscore the potential of this technology. Agri-PV could therefore play a key role in sustainable agriculture in the future and help to overcome the challenges of climate change and global food security. The synergistic effects of agriculture and solar energy open up new perspectives for the efficient and environmentally friendly use of natural resources.
