More jobs with an economic factor in climate protection
Published on: June 24, 2021 / Update from: June 24, 2021 - Author: Konrad Wolfenstein
Compared to 2009, the economic importance of environmental protection has increased significantly. However, spending has been stagnating for three years at roughly the same level as 2019. However, this could change again solar requirement
The solar requirement in some federal states in Germany is also intended to encourage the expansion of open parking spaces with solar carports or photovoltaic solar systems on roofs for non-residential buildings and this will also bring with it additional and new jobs in the area of climate protection.
In 2019, companies in the manufacturing and service sectors in Germany generated sales of 73.6 billion euros with goods, construction and services for environmental protection. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports, the environmental protection industry achieved 3.1% more sales than in 2018. The number of employees employed in the production of these environmental goods and services was 305,000 (measured in full-time equivalents). The number of “green jobs” increased by 5.4% compared to the previous year. Environmental protection is therefore also an important factor for the labor market.
The most economically important environmental area was climate protection with sales of 44.1 billion euros. Followed by water protection (10 billion euros) and air pollution control (8 billion euros). Measures to improve energy efficiency and save energy generated sales of 25.1 billion euros, while measures to use renewable energies generated 17.1 billion euros.
The majority of environmental protection-related sales of 56.5 billion euros (76.7%) were achieved in the manufacturing sector. The most important economic sectors were mechanical engineering (22.1 billion euros), the manufacture of electrical equipment (6.5 billion euros) and the manufacture of motor vehicles and vehicle parts (5.8 billion euros). Environmental protection-related sales amounting to 8.0 billion euros were generated in the construction industry, 8.8 billion euros in the services sector and 0.4 billion euros in the other economic sectors.
Broken down by economic sector, most of the employees (69.8%) working for environmental protection were in the manufacturing sector, at 212,800. In the construction sector, 50,500 employees were involved in the production of environmental goods and services, in the services sector 40,700 and in the other economic sectors 1,000.
