Web3: METAVERSE, Metaworse, Metawhatever?! What is that? – Result of a survey in Germany
Published on: April 24, 2022 / Update from: April 24, 2022 - Author: Konrad Wolfenstein
The Metaverse is on everyone's lips, but most Germans haven't really been able to do much with it yet. 58 percent of the participants in a survey said that they could not imagine anything under the technology buzzword. As our graphic shows, people with a concrete idea of the Metaverse are in the minority in Germany.
According to their own statements, only 19 percent can make sense of the term; 19 percent had at least heard of it. However, the tech industry is already jumping on the Metaverse bandwagon: According to a survey by Sensor Tower, for example, between October 2021 and January 2022, around 100 apps included the term in their title or description in the respective app stores. As of February, a total of 107 gaming, 101 financial and 70 social apps contain the term.
The term gained greater popularity in 1992 through the science fiction novel Snow Crash by the American writer Neal Stephenson, in which the Metaverse refers to a successor to the Internet based on virtual reality. On October 28, 2021, almost 30 years later, Marc Zuckerberg announced the renaming of Facebook to Meta with immediate effect, putting the discussion around the term and related concepts such as web3 in the spotlight.
