💼🚀 Metaverse Challenges: Companies demand more applications and clear standards

🌐 More applications and standards required, less data protection and legal uncertainties

The Metaverse, a digital parallel world that combines real and virtual interactions, has the potential to permanently change the digital landscape. However, companies have mixed feelings about the Metaverse: on the one hand, it is viewed as a potentially revolutionary technology, but on the other hand, there are numerous challenges and hurdles that make rapid and widespread adoption difficult. These challenges include technical, legal and financial aspects as well as internal obstacles within companies.

🚧 The challenges of the Metaverse

1. Lack of practical applications and insufficient benefits

One of the biggest hurdles for companies is the lack of diversity of practical applications in the metaverse. A Bitkom survey showed that 76% of companies surveyed see the lack of concrete application options as a key challenge, compared to 66% two years ago. This illustrates that expectations for the metaverse have increased, but at the same time there is a lack of practical and useful use cases that could motivate companies to invest more.

This perceived lack of direct benefit is also reflected in the attitude of 43% of companies who currently see no added value to their own business models. For another 14%, the Metaverse is not currently a priority because they are investing in other future technologies that are considered more promising in the short term.

Suitable for:

  • The German economy is still putting the brakes on the Metaverse

2. Technological immaturity and lack of standards

Technological immaturity and lack of standardization are slowing the growth of the Metaverse. Around three quarters of the companies surveyed (73%) are of the opinion that the technology is not yet fully developed. This is directly related to interoperability, which is the ability to seamlessly connect different platforms and applications. There is currently a lack of common standards in the metaverse, which means that each platform essentially exists in a “silo” and prevents comprehensive, compatible systems from emerging. 55% of companies are therefore calling for greater standardization to enable seamless use across different platforms.

Interoperability is critical to truly scaling the metaverse. Only if platforms communicate with each other and content and digital goods can be easily transferred from one environment to the next will the metaverse develop sustainable economic relevance for companies.

3. Regulatory uncertainties: data protection and legal issues

Another key problem area concerns data protection and the legal framework. 67% of companies see data protection requirements as a challenge, while 44% point to legal uncertainties and an unclear legal framework. Companies in the metaverse face a complex challenge, particularly with regard to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR requires strict measures to protect personal data, which is particularly challenging in the metaverse, where large amounts of sensitive information such as biometric data are often processed.

The uncertainties extend not only to data protection, but also to questions of legal jurisdiction and applicable law. Because the Metaverse is designed as a global network in which users from different countries can interact, it is often unclear which laws apply and how violations can be prosecuted. These legal questions also concern the issue of intellectual property, which is often difficult to define and protect in virtual space.

4. Internal obstacles: know-how, qualified personnel and financial resources

In addition to the external challenges, there are also internal obstacles within companies that make the path to the metaverse difficult. Around half of the companies state that there is a lack of necessary know-how (52%) and qualified personnel (46%). These knowledge gaps are not surprising, as the metaverse represents a completely new field that combines technical, creative and strategic competencies. As a result, finding professionals capable of developing innovative metaverse projects becomes another challenge.

In addition, 17% of companies lack the financial resources and time to address the issue in depth. Developing and implementing Metaverse applications is costly and time-consuming, and companies are reluctant to invest heavily unless there are clear use cases and benefits for their business.

🌟 Applications and potential of the Metaverse

Despite these challenges, the metaverse opens up promising fields of application that already offer innovative opportunities for companies. The first areas of application are already emerging in various industries:

Gaming

In the field of gaming, the Metaverse offers the opportunity to create completely immersive game worlds that blur the boundaries between reality and games through virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). By introducing new monetization models, such as NFTs or microtransactions for virtual goods, companies can open up new revenue streams.

Education

In the education sector, the Metaverse enables the creation of virtual learning environments that promote interactive learning. Students can learn about complex topics in an immersive environment, which can increase comprehension and retention. Virtual classrooms and laboratories offer the opportunity to link theory and practice more closely.

Healthcare

The metaverse also shows promising approaches in healthcare. Medical simulations can be used to train doctors and nursing staff in realistic scenarios. Additionally, the Metaverse can improve telemedicine by allowing patients to interact with doctors in virtual consultations.

property

In the real estate sector, virtual viewings offer the opportunity to experience properties independently of location and immersively. Potential buyers can view houses and apartments virtually, simplifying and speeding up the buying process.

🔒 Data protection and legal uncertainties

Data protection represents a particularly complex challenge in the Metaverse. In contrast to traditional digital platforms, the Metaverse often processes sensitive and personal data, including biometric information such as facial features and movement profiles. This data is necessary for creating realistic avatars and virtual interactions, but presents a significant privacy challenge.

Since there are currently no specific laws that explicitly address the metaverse, companies will need to apply existing data protection regulations such as GDPR to this new environment. This leads to uncertainty about how exactly these regulations should be implemented in virtual spaces. Companies are faced with the question of how to ensure data protection while providing a realistic and fluid user experience.

In addition, there are legal uncertainties regarding jurisdiction and applicable law in the global context of the Metaverse. Because users from different countries can interact in a virtual environment, it is often unclear which laws apply and how violations can be prosecuted. Clarifying these questions will be crucial to the development of the Metaverse.

🔮 Technological maturity and common standards

The Metaverse holds enormous potential and offers opportunities for innovative business models and new experiences in numerous industries. At the same time, companies face challenges that need to be overcome before the metaverse can be used across the board. Not only is technological maturity and common standards required, but also clear regulatory frameworks and responsible handling of personal data.

Successful integration of the Metaverse will only be possible if companies build up the necessary knowledge and resources internally to fully exploit the possibilities of this technology. Creating a clear legal framework will also be crucial to pave the way for investment and innovation in the metaverse.

The Metaverse is still in its early stages of development, but the possibilities are diverse. Companies should prepare strategically for this future technology now in order to be in a strong starting position for its further development.

🌐🤖 Technology or data protection? Companies face metaverse dilemma

🚀 Companies in the Metaverse face a dilemma between using innovative technologies and complying with strict data protection regulations. This challenge is particularly complex because the Metaverse represents an immersive digital world where physical and virtual realities merge. In this environment, vast amounts of personal data are collected, including biometric data such as eye movements and posture, location information, and financial data.

🌐 Technological opportunities in the metaverse

The Metaverse offers numerous opportunities for companies, particularly in the areas of e-commerce, digital advertising and virtual interactions. The immersive nature of the Metaverse allows companies to improve their marketing strategies by allowing them to deliver personalized advertising based on user behavioral data in real time. These new business models could potentially generate higher revenues as companies are no longer limited to two-dimensional advertising.

In addition, blockchain technology opens up new opportunities for data protection. Web 3.0 and blockchain could allow users to have more control over their data and for it to be stored decentrally. This would reduce the power of big tech companies and provide more privacy for users.

🔒 Privacy Challenges in the Metaverse

The downside of these technological innovations are significant data protection risks. More personal data is being collected and processed in the Metaverse than ever before, which can lead to new threats such as identity theft, cybercrime and deep fake abuse. The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) places high demands on the transparency and protection of personal data. Companies must ensure that they respect users' rights, including the right to access and delete their data.

Another problem is responsibility in the metaverse: often several actors are involved in the processing of user data (e.g. platform operators, companies, payment service providers), which raises the question of who is ultimately responsible for data protection. This complex structure makes it even more difficult for companies to meet legal requirements.

⚖️ The dilemma: technology vs. data protection

Companies are therefore faced with a dilemma: on the one hand, they want to fully exploit the technological possibilities of the Metaverse in order to achieve competitive advantages; on the other hand, they must adhere to strict data protection regulations in order to avoid legal consequences and gain the trust of users. This is particularly problematic for large technology companies whose business models rely heavily on the monetization of user data.

The solution to this dilemma could lie in the development of technologies that provide “data protection by design.” This means that data protection is integrated into software and hardware development from the outset. In addition, decentralized technologies such as blockchain could help users retain more control over their own data.
