📊 👋 Survey on the opportunities and risks of the metaverse for companies in Germany An in-depth analysis
The concept of the metaverse fascinates people worldwide and promises to blur the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds. But how does this revolutionary development affect the corporate landscape, especially in Germany? A survey conducted by Bitkom Research, based on computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI), provides interesting insights. About a third of companies surveyed believe the metaverse will have no impact on them, while another quarter see it as an opportunity. But the numbers say more than they initially seem to reveal.
📊 Survey results in detail
Around a third of respondents said they expect the metaverse to have no impact on their business. Almost another quarter of the companies surveyed see the metaverse as an opportunity.
- Rather than risk – 15%
- Mostly as a risk – 5%
- Mostly as an opportunity – 3%
- More like a chance – 23%
- The Metaverse has no impact on our company – 33%
- Don’t know – 21%
🔍 Analysis of risk perception
20% of respondents see the metaverse as a risk or even a major risk. This perception could be shaped by various factors. It could be the fear of the unknown, or the concern that adopting metaverse technologies requires high investment costs that are not guaranteed to be profitable. Cybersecurity is another significant factor. The Metaverse is a complex digital ecosystem, and like all digital platforms, it is vulnerable to hacks, data leaks, and other security concerns. Businesses that are already struggling to protect their current IT systems may have legitimate concerns.
🌟 Analysis of opportunity perception
Around 26% of those surveyed see the metaverse as an opportunity or even a great opportunity. These companies could operate in sectors that could greatly benefit from virtualization and digitalization, such as e-commerce, education or healthcare. For example, the use of Metaverse technologies could lead to expanded remote work opportunities, advanced training programs, and innovative marketing strategies. By establishing a presence in the metaverse, companies could reach new customer segments and strengthen their brand identity.
🤔 The neutral and insecure
What's interesting is that 33% of respondents believe the metaverse will have no impact on their business. This group could consist of companies that operate in more traditional industries and see digitalization as less relevant to their business model. But it could also be a sign of a lack of awareness or understanding of the transformative power of the metaverse.
Even more remarkable is the high number of unsure people at 21%. This uncertainty could be due to a lack of information or understanding of the concept and represents an opportunity for information and education initiatives.
🔗 Conclusions and recommendations for action
The survey results indicate that the German corporate landscape is divided when it comes to the potential of the metaverse. While some recognize the enormous possibilities, others are cautious or even skeptical. But regardless of current perceptions, it is undeniable that the metaverse could have far-reaching effects on various industries. It would therefore be advisable for companies to address the issue, both to minimize potential risks and to identify new opportunities.
It is becoming increasingly important that companies adapt not only their IT infrastructure but also their business strategies in order to remain competitive in an increasingly digitalized world. Education and information campaigns can be particularly useful for the 21% of “Uncertains” and the 33% of “Neutrals” to help them make more informed decisions.
With these considerations, the Bitkom survey can be seen as a first but important step in the ongoing discussion and research on the influence of the metaverse on the German economy.

The 3D world of the Metaverse or Extended Reality (XR) are obviously not the key to success. It's something else!
A static and a dynamic metaverse are two different approaches to virtual worlds and digital environments, and they can have different impacts and potential benefits when it comes to digital twins.
