Yesterday, March 21, 2024, I was invited to the Mechanical Engineering Summit 2024. The summit was organized by Alibaba.com Germany, a company that, despite its global presence, is only at the beginning of its German involvement in the B2B sector.

I was aware that the focus of this event – ​​mastering digital export – not only represents a challenge, but also presents an outstanding opportunity for medium-sized companies in Germany. I see a great opportunity for German mechanical engineering to showcase the strengths of our industry, namely quality and technical superiority, at an international level and, in particular, to target the Chinese market and beyond.

🌎 Global potential and digital solutions

The exchange of ideas and the innovative solutions that were presented there gave me deep insights into the potential that is available to us, but also into the obstacles that need to be overcome. With one eye on the world, I find it important to explore the opportunities and challenges of the global B2B market - and also China. The country is not only a huge market, but also one whose down-to-earth nature and dynamism require tailored strategies. German goods, products and machinery are known for their quality and I am convinced that it is of paramount importance to emphasize these strengths in our export approach.

💡 Digital expansion and marketing in focus

The questions that concern me in mechanical engineering go into the depths of the topic of digitalization and market expansion: How do I achieve global visibility as a company? How do I approach digitalization most effectively? How do I successfully establish B2B e-commerce in mechanical engineering? Which marketing appeals best to my target groups? How do I establish contact with new customers from new markets? These and other questions were discussed at the summit, with a focus on viable solutions on Alibaba.com's e-commerce platform.

🤝 Partnership with Alibaba and shared goals

My conversations with Alibaba employees showed that they are very interested in a deep understanding of the special requirements of German mechanical engineering. I noticed a noticeable openness and willingness to learn, which is essential for future collaboration and shared success. I am optimistic that Alibaba, with its strong global presence and e-commerce expertise, can be exactly the right partner to adequately present our engineering products on the world stage.

📊 Tradition meets digital innovations

A key element of the mechanical engineering summit were the discussions and lectures that provided important insights into the integration of traditional mechanical engineering and modern digital sales channels. I explored how we can digitally transform established business models and advertise on online platforms such as Alibaba to promote the high-quality German machines. The resulting increase in reach and improvement in customer experience could be significant.

I left the summit with a clear message: digitalization and e-commerce are not just additions to our business - they are essential for survival and growth in today's connected economy. The transition to these new models must be strategic, gradual and with a strong emphasis on customer centricity.

🤔 Hurdles and adaptation as a path to the goal

The Alibaba Engineering Summit 2024 provided a platform for exchange and inspiration. The path is not without hurdles - rural conditions, government regulations and cultural differences must be taken into account. But a combination of adaptability, digital strategies and collaboration with innovative partners like Alibaba can also pave the way to success. I am ready to take the necessary steps to get our products across borders into the hands of the people who need and value them.
