🚀💡 New contact point for founders, start-ups and SMEs: Promote the development of trustworthy AI from Germany
📊 If you look at the technological developments of the present and future, it becomes clear how crucial artificial intelligence (AI) is for the innovative strength and competitiveness of companies. In this context, a significant event took place in Kaiserslautern last Friday: the opening of a new center for artificial intelligence at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Under the leadership of Federal Digital Minister Dr. The AI Innovation and Quality Center was ceremoniously inaugurated by Volker Wissing and the Rhineland-Palatinate Economics Minister Daniela Schmitt.
🌟🎉 “MISSION KI” initiative and the importance of the new center
This center is an important part of the “MISSION KI” initiative and the first of two planned centers funded by the federal government. The goal is to advance the use of trustworthy AI. Dr. Volker Wissing underlined the importance of the new center in his speech:
“With the AI center in Kaiserslautern, we are creating a bridge between research and practical application. This is where innovative ideas can emerge and AI applications can be subjected to a quality check. Companies receive concrete help to assess the risks of AI at an early stage - also with regard to EU requirements. In doing so, we want to promote the development of trustworthy AI 'Made-in-Germany' and support German companies. Rhineland-Palatinate is the ideal location with its dynamic AI and biotech scene. This center will not only drive innovation, but also help ensure that we in Germany remain a leader in this future technology.”
📍🏢 Strategic importance of the Kaiserslautern location
State Minister Daniela Schmitt emphasized the strategic importance of the location in her contribution:
“With the DFKI, Kaiserslautern is the central location for artificial intelligence in Germany. It makes sense and I am particularly pleased that Rhineland-Palatinate will now be home to one of two new AI centers financed by the federal government. Our medium-sized companies in the country will particularly benefit from the knowledge transfer and the development of corresponding applications.”
The State Minister emphasized that the close networking of business and science is laying the foundation for a flourishing AI ecosystem in Rhineland-Palatinate.
🔬🤝 Collaboration between Acatech and DFKI
The new center will be operated jointly by Acatech and DFKI. A particular focus is on developing test procedures for AI applications in order to increase trust in this technology. In addition to advice and future testing support, workshops are offered for skills development, knowledge transfer and strengthening the regional AI community. Prof. Dr. Andreas Dengel, Managing Director of the DFKI in Kaiserslautern, explained:
“Locating the Innovation and Quality Center at DFKI enables us to use existing structures and create valuable synergies through the broad expertise of our research areas and the extensive networks in the area of trustworthy AI. As a research partner for companies from a wide range of industries, we know about the special challenges in terms of security, reliability and ethical acceptability that come with the development of marketable AI applications. With the Innovation and Quality Center we would like to create a contact point for all companies in order to offer them access to cutting-edge AI research.”
⚕️🩺 Focus on the health sector
One focus of the new center will initially be on the use of AI in the healthcare sector. This decision is not accidental, but reflects the strong presence of companies and research institutions from medicine, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology in the region. The DFKI plans to develop tools to assess the quality of medical AI systems and to improve them. These should start early in the development process and take into account the specific requirements of health or high-risk applications. Use cases such as the detection of skin cancer or safe intubation serve as concrete examples to test and validate the methods developed. In addition, quality and testing standards developed by “MISSION KI” should be applied.
🏭🌐 Cross-industry innovation support
However, despite the focus on medicine, the center is open to innovators from all industries. This is intended to ensure that a wide range of AI applications can be developed and promoted. The establishment of the AI center in Kaiserslautern is only part of the broader “MISSION AI” initiative, which is financed by the Federal Digital Ministry with a total budget of 32 million euros. Another center is to be built in Berlin by the end of the year to ensure nationwide coverage and support to promote AI development.
🎯🔍 Goals of the “MISSION AI”
Manfred Rauhmeier, Managing Director of acatech, made it clear:
“With MISSION AI, we are pursuing a clear goal: to make testing AI applications as practical as possible for companies while at the same time ensuring security and transparency. In doing so, we are creating the conditions to fully exploit the immense potential of AI for our economy and society. Germany should take a pioneering role not only in AI research, but also in practical application.”
🏢💼 Extensive knowledge transfer and regional economic development
The center in Kaiserslautern is intended to not only be a place for ideas and innovations, but also to provide practical assistance for companies facing the challenges of AI development. Close collaboration with research institutions, industrial partners and the regional economy enables extensive knowledge transfer. In the long term, this could contribute to Germany being recognized not only as a research location, but also as a market leader in the application of artificial intelligence.
⛲🌍 Potential and impact beyond regional borders
The new center therefore has the potential to have an impact far beyond its regional borders. It will be a center of excellence that could serve as a model for other regions and international partners. With the establishment of this center, Germany is sending a clear signal for the promotion of innovation, quality and trustworthiness in artificial intelligence.
