Future technologies revealed: Highlights of Google I/O 2025
Google I/O 2025 showcased numerous innovations in the field of AI, underscoring Google's ambition to remain a leader in the AI landscape. From autonomous programming agents and film production tools to a completely redesigned search engine, Google presented an impressive portfolio of AI-powered products and services with the potential to fundamentally transform how we interact digitally.
Suitable for:
Jules: The autonomous programming agent enters the public stage
Google has released its AI programming agent Jules into public beta. Originally unveiled in December 2024, Jules has previously only been available to a limited extent through Google Labs. The agent is based on Gemini 2.5 Pro, which, according to Google, not only leads in programming benchmarks but can also transparently explain solution paths through reasoning.
Unlike conventional code assistants, Jules works asynchronously and autonomously. Instead of just making code suggestions, the agent takes on entire tasks: It writes tests, develops new features, fixes bugs, and updates outdated dependencies. Its way of working differs fundamentally from previous solutions
“Jules is an asynchronous, agentic coding assistant that integrates directly into existing repositories. It clones your codebase into a secure Google Cloud Virtual Machine (VM), understands the full context of your project, and performs tasks.”.
One interesting feature is the audio summary of changelogs, allowing developers to have changes read aloud. Jules works by directly cloning repositories into a Google Cloud VM, with Google promising not to use the code for training purposes and to isolate the data. Jules is free to use during the beta phase, but Google plans to switch to a paid model later.
Technical Integration and Workflow
Jules integrates seamlessly into GitHub workflows, allowing developers to work on multiple tasks simultaneously. Once a task is submitted, Jules generates a plan and suggests changes. Developers can review these changes, propose modifications, or incorporate them directly into the code. This deep integration and parallel processing allows programmers to focus on creative aspects while Jules handles routine tasks.
Gemini 2.5: Deeper thinking and improved efficiency
One of the most remarkable new features is the “Deep Think” mode for Gemini 2.5 Pro. This experimental function allows the model to consider multiple hypotheses before providing an answer. This is particularly evident in complex mathematical problems and programming challenges.
Google describes the mode as follows: “Deep Think uses new research techniques that allow the model to consider multiple hypotheses before responding.” In benchmark tests, Deep Think achieved impressive results, including a score of 84% in the multimodal reasoning test MMMU and outstanding performance in the highly demanding United States of America Mathematical Olympiad 2025.
Gemini 2.5 Flash has also been reworked and now requires 20 to 30 percent fewer tokens for processing, while showing improved performance in reasoning, multimodality, and code processing. This optimized version will be available to all developers starting in June.
Performance improvements and new features
Gemini 2.5 Pro dominates current AI benchmarks. The model leads the WebDev Arena with an ELO score of 1,415 and sets new standards for understanding long texts and videos with its context window of one million tokens.
Another innovation is native audio output, which enables more natural conversational experiences. Developers can adjust tone of voice, accent, and speaking style, with the system supporting more than 24 languages and even seamlessly switching between them.
Veo 3 and Flow: The Revolution of AI Film Production
With Veo 3 and the Flow tool built upon it, Google is ushering in a new era of AI-powered video production. Veo 3 marks a crucial turning point, as it is the first AI video model capable of generating synchronized audio output – a feature previously unavailable in any competing product.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis aptly describes this advancement: “We are leaving the silent film era of video generation.” Veo 3 can not only generate sound effects and background noises, but also dialogue that is perfectly synchronized with the video.
Flow: A tailor-made film production tool
Flow was specifically developed for the Veo model and optimizes the strengths of AI for filmmakers. Google describes Flow as “inspired by the feeling when time slows down and creation is effortless, iterative, and full of possibilities.” The tool is designed specifically for Veo, “with exceptional prompt adherence and stunning cinematic output that excels in physics and realism.”.
Flow offers filmmakers several key features:
- Camera control: Direct control over camera movement, angles, and perspectives
- Scene builder: Seamless editing and expansion of existing recordings
- Asset Management: Easy administration and organization of all elements and prompts
- Flow TV: A constantly growing selection of clips for inspiration
Flow is now available to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra plans in the US, with a planned expansion to other countries.

The transformation of Google search
Google AI Mode is now available to all users in the US and represents a fundamental redesign of the search engine. The term refers to "a completely new search experience where the elements in the search results are compiled using AI.".
This AI-powered search can answer complex, multi-part questions by splitting large search queries into several smaller ones and processing them in parallel – a process known as “query fan-out”. AI Mode is supported by Gemini 2.5, as are AI Overviews.
Enhanced features and global expansion
The AI Overviews feature is leaving Google Labs and will be available worldwide in over 200 countries and more than 40 languages. According to Google, over 1.5 billion users already use these AI features monthly, highlighting the rapid adoption of this technology.
The AI Mode receives a personalized context and can perform dozens or even hundreds of searches in parallel using Deep Search. Additionally, it will be possible to analyze complex data in AI Mode this summer.
A particularly innovative enhancement is the integration of Project Astra under the name “Search Live.” This feature allows users to ask questions about what they are currently seeing through their smartphone camera. “Project Astra processes live audio and video into an AI framework and delivers answers to user queries with minimal delay.”.
Smart Shopping: AI is revolutionizing the shopping experience
A new shopping feature, which utilizes the Shopping Graph with over 50 billion products, is generating particular interest. This enables precise and differentiated product searches and offers innovative features:
- A virtual fitting aid shows how garments would look on the wearer
- Automatic calculation of body measurements using the smartphone camera
- Tracking the price development of desired products
- Automated purchasing and ordering through AI
This feature is already testable in Google Labs and marks a significant step towards fully AI-powered e-commerce experiences.
Impact on the digital landscape
The innovations unveiled at Google I/O 2025 will have far-reaching implications across various fields. For developers, tools like Jules will open up new possibilities and could also automate certain programming tasks. Creative professionals such as filmmakers will gain powerful tools like Veo 3 and Flow, which could revolutionize the production process.
It is noteworthy, however, that Google made no explicit statements at I/O regarding the impact of its AI technologies on websites and SEO. The transformation of Google Search through AI Mode will undoubtedly change the way users interact with search results, which in turn will have consequences for website operators and content creators.
With the introduction of AI-powered shopping features, automated purchases, and the deep integration of AI into search, user behavior could fundamentally change. Websites could lose importance in certain areas, as AI systems provide direct answers or even conduct transactions.
Google's comprehensive AI strategy
Google I/O 2025 impressively demonstrates the comprehensiveness of Google's AI strategy. From autonomous programming agents and AI-powered film production to a complete redesign of search, Google is positioning itself at the forefront of the AI revolution.
With the introduction of the premium subscription service Google AI Ultra for $249.99 per month, Google is signaling that high-quality AI services come at a price. The strategy of offering certain advanced features exclusively to subscribers could lead to a two-tier system in AI usage.
The technologies presented mark a significant step towards an AI-driven digital world. While they open up fascinating new possibilities, they also raise questions about data privacy, content authenticity, and the future role of website operators and content creators. The coming months will show how users, developers, and the market will react to these profound changes.
