The distribution of perishable goods in rural areas places the highest demands on food suppliers. Innovative logistics concepts are required to enable a high standard of service.
Public services refer to the provision of everyday goods and services to the population. Securing the necessary infrastructure is undertaken either by the public sector or by private entrepreneurs. Comprehensive fresh logistics is already common practice in the USA, Great Britain and especially in Asia. Supermarkets run their own online shops that ensure timely delivery of groceries. In Germany, a functioning supply structure still depends largely on the quality of housing and location. Local retail establishments and retail-related service providers are socially important meeting places and workplaces are of great social importance as sales outlets. However, the number of shops in rural areas has been declining for years. However, a complete infrastructure is essential for older people in particular due to a lack of mobility.
Challenge for logistics
Humans are creatures of habits. Customer service must therefore be adapted to the needs and habits of end users. The challenges for logistics to supply rural areas are primarily the long distances. Fresh logistics must therefore adopt new approaches to picking and transport logistics. The top priority is to strictly adhere to the cold chain from the distributor or point of sale to the customer. It is also important to take into account the climate and temperature zones as well as the hygiene zones for fresh meat or similar. The aim must be to provide customers with a high-quality and representative product image at all times.
Solution and implementation paths
Temperature-controlled warehouses place special demands on the mechanics, electronics and control technology of the storage systems. The DAIFUKU solutions are fully efficient even at temperatures down to minus 40 degrees Celsius. For example, eight distribution warehouses were combined into a new warehouse complex for a drugstore and food mail order company in Japan. The company was able to increase its same-day delivery rate to 91 percent. At the same time, almost no more shipping errors occurred with DAIFUKU's intralogistics. The material handling expert has also developed a new system for processing 10,000 orders per day with a delivery time of three hours or more for a South Korean online supermarket. Compared to the previous solution, this corresponds to a fourfold increase in productivity.
