🧊🥕🥬🥦 The challenges of refrigerated logistics: ensuring the freshness and quality of food and protecting the environment
🧊 Solution and example for frozen storage: 👨🍳📦🌡️ Fresh logistics and refrigerated logistics represent a demanding challenge in the supply chain
🌡️ Frozen storage and refrigerated logistics undoubtedly represent one of the most demanding challenges in the supply chain. The essential goal here is to maintain the cold chain without interruptions to ensure the quality and safety of perishable foods. This is particularly important in a world where demand for frozen products is constantly increasing. Today, more than ever, consumers are demanding a year-round offering of products that were traditionally only available seasonally - a fact that further increases the complexity of refrigerated logistics.
❄️ The ever-increasing popularity of ready meals such as frozen pizza and the increase in vegetarian and vegan products reflect a significant change in eating habits and associated freshness requirements. The days when seasonal products like strawberries were only available in the summer months are over. Advanced cooling technologies and logistics processes have made it possible to supply consumers with these products all year round. But while the technical possibilities of refrigerated logistics have developed, the challenges in warehousing and the often difficult working conditions have essentially remained the same. These unattractive aspects of the industry contribute to a shortage of skilled workers, particularly in areas that still rely heavily on manual labor and where a fully automated warehousing solution has not yet been implemented.
🏭 The requirements for refrigerated logistics are complex. They range from providing appropriate storage conditions and adhering to strict hygiene standards to ensuring efficient and sustainable logistics. To meet these demands, companies must invest in innovative technologies that improve both product quality and working conditions. These include, for example, modern cooling systems that ensure a constant temperature, as well as software solutions that enable seamless monitoring of the supply chain. In addition, working conditions must be designed in such a way that they are attractive to skilled workers, as this is the only way the sector can remain competitive in the long term.
♻️ It is also important to emphasize that refrigerated logistics plays a crucial role in reducing food waste. Through precisely controlled temperatures and optimized transport routes, food can be kept fresh for longer and the throwaway rate can be reduced. At a time when sustainability is increasingly coming into focus, refrigerated logistics can be seen as a key factor in a more environmentally friendly food supply.
🌍 Refrigerated logistics is a dynamic field that must constantly adapt to new market conditions and consumer expectations. The industry is faced with the challenge of finding innovative solutions that not only ensure the freshness and quality of products, but also improve working conditions and contribute to sustainability. It is an industry where there is still a lot of room for technological advances, and the ability to adapt to these changes will be crucial to how successful companies will be in the future.

🧊 Technology leader Japan in refrigerated logistics – better working conditions optimize distribution processes
Asian countries such as Japan in particular are considered pioneers here. Tokyo, one of the largest cities in the world with over 38 million inhabitants, impressively shows how high population density and quality of life can be combined with the help of innovative urban and infrastructure planning. The expansion of efficient transport and supply systems has been the focus here for decades.

🏭 The Hohsui Corporation: Innovative pioneer in frozen logistics 🧊
❄️ Capacity expansion and secure location: 140,000 tons at nine strategic locations in the Tokyo metropolitan area
Hohsui Corporation has established itself as a leader in frozen logistics through the innovative construction of the Ichikawa distribution center. With the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, the company has significantly expanded its cooling capacity and now has a total of 140,000 tons of cooling capacity at nine strategically placed locations in the Tokyo metropolitan area. This capacity is critical to meeting the needs of customers who want their frozen foods and seafood purchased worldwide to be in safe hands.
🌬️ State-of-the-art cold storage with 8,700 storage units at -25 degrees Celsius
The heart of the center is the -25 degree Celsius cold storage facility, which is equipped with over 8,700 storage units. This enables optimal storage of a wide range of products - from frozen vegetables, which make up half of the monthly throughput volume of around 4,500 tonnes, to frozen goods and livestock, to other cold goods.
🔧 Flexible mobile high-bay warehouse for high storage density and earthquake safety
A special innovation is the mobile high-bay warehouse, which extends over the 2nd to 4th floors. With this facility, Hohsui Corporation can achieve high storage density while ensuring the safety of products during earthquakes because the racks are mounted on trolleys. This flexibility in design also allows storage spaces to be managed efficiently, taking advantage of free spaces through the use of barcodes on shelves for accurate inventory and management.
🚚 Precisely coordinated logistics processes for efficiency and immediate shipping
The logistics processes of the Ichikawa distribution center are precisely coordinated. From inspecting goods receipts on the ground floor, to transporting products to the various levels of the warehouse, to temporary storage for immediate shipping - all processes are designed for efficiency. For distribution to the convenience stores, the so-called picking for each store is coordinated directly from the store's headquarters, with all data being fed into the center's warehouse management system after shipping.
🌍 BCP measures for continuity and safety in all circumstances
Among the extensive BCP measures implemented by the Ichikawa distribution center is the use of seismic isolators to protect the facility against the effects of earthquakes. Additionally, as a tsunami preventive measure, the ground floor was raised and important equipment was installed on the roof. An emergency power supply protects the center from the consequences of power outages. These measures reflect the company's determined stance to ensure the continuity of business processes and the safety of stored products in all circumstances.
🌡️ Temperature control and air quality: Safe storage at a consistently low temperature
Toshio Sekiguchi, director of the Ichikawa logistics center, highlights that in addition to structural integrity and safety measures, special attention is paid to temperature control and air quality. Positive pressure is maintained in the cargo handling area to prevent warm outside air from entering, ensuring a consistently low temperature and product quality.
“One of the peculiarities of the Ichikawa distribution center is that it has adopted many BCP measures, including the use of seismic isolators as a measure against earthquakes, raising the floor of the ground floor and installing important equipment on the roof as a measure against tsunamis, as well as the Installation of an emergency power supply as a measure against power outages. Mobile shelves are characterized by high storage density. They are also considered earthquake-proof due to the presence of trolleys under the shelves. In addition to temperature control in the cargo handling areas on each floor, we maintain positive pressure in the ground floor cargo handling area to prevent warm air from outside from entering, and thoroughly control temperature and quality.” – Toshio Sekiguchi, Director, Ichikawa Logistics Center
💡 Hohsui Corporation: Technological innovation, security awareness and efficient goods management
The Ichikawa distribution center is a prime example of the fusion of technological innovation, safety awareness and efficient goods management. It demonstrates how Hohsui Corporation is not only revolutionizing the storage and distribution of frozen products, but also how it is strengthening its role as a trusted partner for its customers through exceptional risk prevention and quality control measures.
