Electromobility is coming slowly, but it is coming
Published on: May 6, 2021 / Update from: May 6, 2021 - Author: Konrad Wolfenstein
In 2009 there were just under 1,500 electric cars in Germany. A good decade later, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, there will already be around 309,000 electric vehicles in 2021. Not Tesla, but Renault's Zoe was the most frequently registered electric car in Germany in 2020 with almost 30,000 new registrations (2nd place: Tesla Model 3 - 17,438). However, worldwide, Tesla and its Model 3 lead the ranking of electric car sales at the end of 2020 with around 813,000 vehicles sold, ahead of VW, SAIC and BMW. The Nissan Leaf follows in second place worldwide with almost 500,000 electric cars sold. Tesla Model S occupies third place with just over 300,000 new registrations.

In 2020 there was a new record with almost 11 million electric cars registered worldwide. Eight years ago there were 250,380. That's a fifty-fold increase!
In addition to renewable energies, electromobility is one of the central building blocks of the European energy transition. But China is miles ahead of the Europeans, with the number of electric cars in China amounting to over 5 million in 2020. That's almost three times as much as second place - the USA - in a global comparison. In China, an electric car quota came into force in spring 2019, banning the production of automobile models with high fuel consumption. Manufacturers are therefore obliged to maintain a percentage of alternative drives in the production and sales of their vehicles. In the electric car business, Chinese automobile manufacturers dominate the market in China. Foreign manufacturers are far behind. Many of the Chinese automobile manufacturers are still hardly known in the Western world.

Amount of the environmental bonus for the purchase of electric vehicles in Germany (as of June 10, 2020)
In order to further promote sales of electric vehicles, the federal government decided on a purchase bonus for electric cars in April 2016, which came into force in May 2016. Most applications for environmental bonuses have so far been for electric vehicles from the manufacturer VW. Renault and BMW followed in second and third place. Vehicles up to 65,000 euros can be funded. The purchase (purchase or leasing) of a battery-electric, plug-in hybrid or fuel cell vehicle that is registered for the first time and does not exceed a net list price of the basic model of 65,000 euros is eligible for funding.
