🗒️ Habeck gives the go-ahead for the important north-south power line SuedLink: We must work together to speed up grid expansion

At a celebratory launch event at the Leingarten substation near Heilbronn, Federal Minister Robert Habeck, together with the transmission system operator TransnetBW, today officially began construction of the first converter for the SuedLink high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line. This marks the start of the construction and implementation phase of SuedLink. As one of four converters, this facility will convert the direct current (DC) flowing from the north into alternating current (AC). The electricity will then be transmitted to consumers via the AC grid.

The converter is scheduled to begin operation in 2026 and will then make a significant contribution to grid stability in Baden-Württemberg, even before SuedLink is commissioned in 2028. Construction of the first sections of the line is slated to begin this year, with the remaining sections to follow by the end of 2025.

Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck: “We must work together to accelerate grid expansion. The start of construction on SuedLink is therefore a crucial step. Over the next two decades, we will need thousands of kilometers of additional power lines. These must be planned, approved, and built as quickly as possible. To enable us to implement these projects faster, the Federal Government has already introduced numerous acceleration measures and legal simplifications and is working on further procedural streamlining. It is important that all parties involved proceed pragmatically and with a focus on solutions, and that everyone pulls together to meet the ambitious deadlines. The start of construction here in Leingarten shows that, despite all the challenges, progress is being made on expanding the power grid.”

The converter station in Leingarten marks the southern end of the approximately 700-kilometer-long high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link between Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein and Großgartach in Baden-Württemberg. The SuedLink HVDC line is a key project for the energy transition and, upon its commissioning in 2028, will transport electricity from the wind-rich north to consumption centers in southern Germany.

Currently, around 14,000 kilometers of new railway lines are being constructed in 119 projects in Germany. Approximately 2,000 km of these are already fully operational. Around 3,400 km are still in the approval process, 1,500 km are undergoing regional planning or federal sectoral planning procedures, 5,400 km are in the planning approval process, and approximately 1,500 km are currently under construction.

🗒️ The energy transition and Germany's electricity grid: A major challenge

1. 🔌 The basis: The current electricity transmission network

Germany has an extensive electricity transmission network spanning approximately 35,000 kilometers. This network continuously supplies private households, businesses, and industrial plants with energy. However, like any infrastructure, the electricity grid also requires expansion and modernization.

2. ⏳ Approval process: A time-consuming process

The construction of new high-voltage power lines is a complex undertaking. It requires thorough planning, extensive permitting processes, and finally, the actual construction. Germany plans to build an additional 14,000 kilometers of high-voltage power lines in the coming years.

3. 🌬️ Green electricity: The growing share of renewable energies

Renewable energies, especially wind power, are taking up an ever-increasing share of Germany's electricity production. This presents the electricity grid with new challenges: wind turbines are often located in regions where the wind blows particularly strongly – especially in northern and eastern Germany, as well as offshore.

4. 🛣️ “Electricity highways”: Bridges between production and consumption

The planned "electricity highways" are intended to efficiently transport green electricity produced in the windy north to the industrialized west and south. This will not only ensure the distribution of green electricity throughout Germany, but also increase security of supply.

5. 🏭 The major consumers: Industrial companies in the south and west

While wind power is primarily generated in the north and east, the largest consumers, mainly industrial plants, are located in the south and west. The planned high-voltage power lines are therefore essential to close this gap.

6. ⏩ Accelerating processes: A must for the energy transition

Federal Network Agency head Klaus Müller emphasized the need to utilize all available means to expedite the procedures. While progress is currently only visible in individual sections of the network, Müller expressed confidence for the coming years.

🔌⚡ Electricity highways: A must for the energy transition ⚡🔧

Suedlink and its relevance

Without high-voltage power lines like Suedlink, the energy transition would be nothing more than a pipe dream. It's great to see projects like this moving forward. Sure, it took longer and cost more than expected, but mega-projects like these aren't easy. The public protests and the decision to lay the cables underground certainly played a part.

Underground cables: Pros and cons

Some argue that the ground could dry out due to the underground installation. Others say that the opportunity should be taken to place several lines down there at once. Yes, there are concerns, but there are always solutions.

The capacity of Suedlink

An interesting point: Suedlink's capacity is roughly equivalent to that of four nuclear power plants. This means Suedlink could supply approximately ten million households with electricity. Considering that six nuclear power plants have been shut down since 2022, the importance of such projects becomes clear. It is particularly noteworthy that wind power in the north, as well as nuclear power, is largely CO2-neutral.

Connections with foreign countries

It's great to hear that there are also plans to connect renewable energy sources with other countries, such as Norway. Projects like the NordLink connection are a step in the right direction. It would be fantastic if the distribution networks and electricity consumers were also upgraded and made "smart." That would give energy storage a real boost.

The future of Suedlink

Suedlink is an impressive project that truly helps, but it cannot alone guarantee supply in the face of a sharply increasing electricity demand after 2030 if nuclear and coal-fired power plants are to be phased out. While phasing out both energy sources simultaneously may be controversial, it demonstrates the importance of renewables and projects like Suedlink.

In conclusion, it's clear that the energy transition would be impossible without projects like Suedlink. Despite all the concerns and challenges, this project demonstrates what the future of energy supply in Germany could look like. And that's pretty exciting!
