With its 2022 Sustainability Report, Dematic outlines its comprehensive commitment to climate protection. As a globally operating company and worldwide employer, the intralogistics specialist is acutely aware of its special responsibility to society, the environment, and the climate. The report details the company's intensive efforts to make a positive impact in all these areas. According to the report, Dematic emitted 24 percent less greenhouse gases (GHG) last year compared to 2020. The company's global water consumption decreased by 37 percent during the reporting period, and its total waste volume fell by seven percent. At the end of the year, 81 percent of all Dematic locations had an environmental management system (EMS) certified according to ISO 14001. In addition, numerous European branches were awarded the EcoVadis Platinum label. The locations in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) also received the Platinum certification for 2022.

“Sustainability is not just a vision, but a commitment that we actively live. Our goal is for all our sites to have ISO 14001 certification by 2024,” says Bernard Biolchini, Executive Vice President, Dematic EMEA Region.

Dematic's progress in sustainability is evidenced by the EcoVadis certification awarded to numerous locations. "Many of our operations, for example in the DACH region, the UK, Spain, Italy, and the Czech Republic, have received a Platinum rating – the highest award given by EcoVadis – placing them among the top one percent of companies in terms of sustainability," reports Biolchini. Furthermore, Dematic has defined several sustainability targets for its own supply chain, contributing to more than 45 percent of its most strategically important suppliers also receiving the EcoVadis certification or an equivalent qualification last year. By the end of 2023, all high-risk suppliers are required to submit their sustainability data to EcoVadis or comparable organizations for sustainability assessment. From 2025 onward, this will apply to all of the company's direct suppliers.

Dematic also achieved significant improvements in other areas of environmental protection last year. Despite the dynamic recovery of business following the pandemic, the company succeeded in reducing its total Scope 1 (direct release of greenhouse gases within its own operations) and Scope 2 (indirect release of greenhouse gases by energy suppliers) GHG emissions by 24 percent compared to 2020. Fittingly, the intralogistics specialist is also among the nominees for the German Sustainability Award. This prestigious award recognizes exemplary sustainability achievements in business, municipalities, and research. "This is further recognition of our commitment to a sustainable future," says Biolchini.

The intensified measures to reduce waste are also showing positive effects: The company's total waste volume fell by seven percent last year to 3,727 tons. "This success is due to new processes at our production sites, as this is where the greatest potential for improvement lies," explains Biolchini. To realize this potential, Dematic regularly analyzes and evaluates the methods used and seeks innovative solutions for reducing waste and rejects – from traditional recycling to the recovery of materials.

“Efficiency has always been one of the reasons for Dematic’s success. Our customers expect us to make their processes more efficient. We hold ourselves to the same high standard. That’s why we continuously review our own processes and determine, for example, where and how we can most effectively reduce the environmental impact of our operations,” says Biolchini. Against this backdrop, Dematic began implementing an ISO 14001-certified environmental management system (EMS) at all its international locations in 2019. Certified by an independent body according to strict ISO criteria, the EMS ensures continuous, systematic improvement in environmental performance. As of December 2022, 81 percent of the company’s locations are certified. The stated goal is to reach 100 percent by 2024.
