With its 2022 sustainability report, Dematic provides information about its comprehensive commitment to climate protection. As a global company and global employer, the intralogistics specialist is aware of its special responsibility for society, the environment and the climate. The report provides information about the intensive efforts to provide positive impulses in all of these matters. Accordingly, Dematic emitted 24 percent fewer greenhouse gases (GHG) last year compared to 2020. The company's water consumption fell by 37 percent worldwide during the period under review, and the total amount of waste fell by seven percent. At the end of the year, 81 percent of all Dematic locations had an environmental management system (UMS) certified according to ISO 14001. Numerous European branches have been awarded the EcoVadis Platinum seal. The locations in the DACH region also received the Platinum award for 2022.

“Sustainability is not just a vision, but a commitment that we actively live. Our goal is for all of our sites to have ISO 14001 certifications by 2024,” says Bernard Biolchini, Executive Vice President, Dematic EMEA Region.

An expression of Dematic's progress in terms of sustainability is the awarding of numerous locations with the EcoVadis seal. “Many of our companies, for example in the DACH region, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic, have received a platinum rating - the highest award given by EcoVadis - and are therefore among the top percent of companies when it comes to sustainability,” reports Biolchini. Dematic has also set several sustainability goals in relation to its own supply chain and has contributed to the fact that more than 45 percent of the most strategically important suppliers also received the EcoVadis seal or an equivalent certificate last year. By the end of 2023, all high-risk suppliers, without exception, are required to submit their sustainability data to EcoVadis or comparable organizations for sustainability assessment. From 2025, this will apply to all of the company's direct suppliers.

Dematic also made notable improvements in other areas of environmental protection last year. Although business activity developed dynamically after the pandemic subsided, the company managed to reduce the total volume of its Scope 1 (direct release of climate-damaging gases within its own company) and Scope 2 (indirect release of climate-damaging gases by energy suppliers) GHG emissions. To reduce emissions and reduce them by 24 percent compared to 2020. In keeping with this, the intralogistics specialist is also one of the nominees for the German Sustainability Award. The renowned award honors exemplary sustainability achievements in business, municipalities and research. “A renewed recognition of our commitment to a sustainable future,” says Biolchini.

The intensified measures to reduce the amount of waste also have positive effects: the company's total waste volume fell by seven percent to 3,727 tons last year. “This success is due to new processes at our production sites, because that is where the greatest potential for improvement lies,” explains Biolchini. In order to address this, Dematic regularly analyzes and evaluates the methods used and looks for innovative solutions to reduce waste and rejects - from classic recycling to the recycling of materials.

“Efficiency has always been one of the reasons for Dematic’s success. Our customers expect us to make their processes more efficient. “We place this same demand on ourselves. That’s why we continually review our own processes and determine, for example, where and how we can most effectively reduce the impact of our activities on the environment,” says Biolchini. Against this background, Dematic began introducing an ISO 14001 certified environmental management system (UMS) at all international locations in 2019. The EMS, certified by an independent body according to strict ISO criteria, ensures continuous, systematic improvement in environmental performance. Since December 2022, the rate of correspondingly certified locations has been 81 percent. The stated goal is to reach the 100 percent mark by 2024.

The subject of the latest sustainability report is the business activities, performance and key figures for the 2022 financial year (January 1 to December 31, 2022).
