Solar carports have been around for a long time - a German pioneering achievement
Back in 2010, one of the world's largest solar carport systems with a peak output of 5.9 megawatts was built on the premises of the Altmann logistics group in Italy.
24,700 solar modules were installed on four areas with a total area of around 13,000 square meters, which form the roof of the carport. The carport offers space for around 6,000 cars and has a dual function: the solar system on the roof generates 6.4 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year and at the same time protects the vehicles from the weather and pollution.
The German company Phoenix Solar AG from Sulzemoos, which has now gone bankrupt, achieved a pioneering achievement long before the major EU plans for climate neutrality and the solar obligation in various federal states .

At the request of Rhineland-Palatinate, the federal and state energy ministers will discuss tomorrow, Wednesday, how the financing of renewable energies will be fit for a climate-neutral future
The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) dates back to 2000. More than twenty years after its introduction, the energy system in Germany has fundamentally changed. A significant proportion of electricity requirements are now covered by renewable energies: in 2020 the proportion was around 46 percent. Against this background, the financing system, which has become increasingly extensive and complex over the years, sends distorted price signals that inhibit the further expansion of renewables. Despite the steadily increasing proportion of renewables, electricity is heavily burdened with taxes, levies and levies compared to other energy sources, which blocks further investments in climate protection technologies.
“The time for regulatory small-scale is over. The system for financing renewable energies is getting old and no longer fits our energy system today. In order to achieve our climate goals in Rhineland-Palatinate and nationwide, we need a comprehensive overall reform. In Rhineland-Palatinate we want to at least double the installed wind energy output by 2030 and at least triple the solar energy. We can only achieve this with the right federal policy framework. The system for financing renewable energies is a very central, if not the decisive, lever. We now have to adjust these for the future,” said Energy Minister Anne Spiegel in Mainz today.

Rhineland-Palatinate remains at the top in a country comparison / More than half of the wind turbines commissioned in 2020 are in the forest
“The energy transition protects our forests in the long term because renewable energies do not emit any climate-damaging CO2 during production. That's why it's important to build more wind turbines in forests. “I am glad that we in Rhineland-Palatinate are maintaining our leading position in comparison with other countries when it comes to wind energy in the forest and are thus driving forward the fight against climate change,” said State Minister Anne Spiegel on the occasion of the current report from the onshore wind energy agency.
In 2020, with 15 new systems, more than half of the new wind turbines in Rhineland-Palatinate were put into operation on forest areas (58 percent). This means that Rhineland-Palatinate remains the federal state with the most wind turbines in the forest. Last year, every fourth wind turbine in the country turned in the forest. Of the wind turbines installed in the forest, 84 percent are on municipal land and thus offer a good source of income for the communities and for the future of future generations - for example, they enable the financing of a daycare center or a new playground.

“The country’s climate goals cannot be achieved through reforestation alone. This is why the efficient and nature-friendly use of wind energy in the forest is necessary: the renewable electricity from a wind turbine can save around 4,500 tons of CO2 annually compared to the same amount of lignite-fired electricity. The emissions for the construction of the system have already been taken into account. For comparison: the climate protection contribution of one hectare of forest in Rhineland-Palatinate amounts to around 10.4 tons of CO2. Accordingly, all wind turbines in the Rhineland-Palatinate forests – 467 in total – can save as much CO2 as an area of around 200,000 hectares of forest.
“The dramatic situation in our forests makes the effects of climate change visible. In order to achieve our climate protection goals, we must at least double the use of wind energy in the country. The advantage of wind energy in the forest: The locations are often far away from residential areas and in areas where the wind blows particularly strongly. They often offer the best conditions for commissioning wind turbines. We want to continue to use this sensibly and in a nature-friendly manner and use wind energy in the forest to advance the energy transition and counteract forest dieback,” Spiegel concluded.
Background:
The onshore wind energy agency publishes an annual report on the development of wind energy in the forest. As was the case last year, Rhineland-Palatinate continues to be a leader in the expansion and use of wind turbines on forest areas. With 840,000 hectares, 42 percent of the total land area in Rhineland-Palatinate is forest area. Almost half of the forest (46 percent) is owned by cities and municipalities, and a good quarter (26 percent) is owned by the state. At the end of 2020, 467 wind turbines were in operation in Rhineland-Palatinate on forest areas in the Eifel, Hunsrück, Westerwald and Taunus with a total output of 1,233 MW: 15 more than in the previous year. At the end of last year, one in four wind turbines, or 33 percent of the total installed capacity in Rhineland-Palatinate, was turning in the forest.
The Rhein-Hunsrück district, among others, shows that the expansion of wind energy in the forest is profitable. This was the first district in Germany to become CO2-neutral. Previously one of the structurally weakest regions, the municipalities there now have the lowest municipal debt in the country. The income from the operation of the renewable energy systems alone of around 50 million euros annually serves to increase quality of life, social purposes and to promote further investments in climate protection measures such as biomass fermentation plants, modern local heating networks with solar thermal energy or efficient sewage treatment plants. And: in the middle of wind farms, the Geierlay suspension bridge is an attraction.

In order to achieve its ambitious climate protection goals, the state wants to provide even greater support to communities and cities in climate protection and adaptation to the effects of climate change. The state government has therefore decided to strive for a “municipal climate pact” together with the municipal umbrella associations. “The increase in extreme weather events such as the devastating catastrophe in the north of the country as a result of climate change can only be cushioned in the long term with consistent climate protection and flood prevention,” explained Climate Protection Minister Anne Spiegel. “We want to achieve climate neutrality in Rhineland-Palatinate between 2035 and 2040. We can only achieve this goal with allies – climate protection is a shared social task. The key players here are our cities and municipalities, because the implementation of the energy transition and climate protection takes place locally in the municipalities. That's why we want to support our cities and communities in climate protection and adaptation to the effects of climate change in concerted action with the relevant institutions in the country and to systematically combine forces for more climate protection: with optimized funding for climate protection and adaptation to the effects of climate change as well as targeted and coordinated consulting services from the Energy Agency Rhineland-Palatinate and the Competence Center for the Impact of Climate Change,” Spiegel continued.
The plan is to quickly define goals, measures and concrete milestones for the success of climate protection and the energy transition with the three municipal umbrella associations, the Association of Municipal Companies (VKU), the responsible ministries, the Rhineland-Palatinate Energy Agency and the Competence Center for the Impact of Climate Change. The state government wants to support municipalities in intensifying the many good approaches that are already underway locally. The state can also benefit from the know-how of the municipalities. “We want to create the first prerequisites for the 'municipal climate pact' as soon as possible and start negotiations with the leading municipal associations,” announced Spiegel. The Council of Ministers therefore commissioned the Climate Protection Ministry at its last meeting before the summer break to begin relevant negotiations.
Another topic from which municipalities and municipal companies can benefit in the long term is the further development of Rhineland-Palatinate into a model region for green hydrogen. “Hydrogen produced in a greenhouse gas-neutral manner will help us achieve our climate protection goals and decarbonize our economy. In this way, we want to combine the future and competitiveness of our state with climate protection. The advantage: Hydrogen can be used in a variety of ways - as an energy source in the electricity, heat and transport sectors, as an energy storage device, but also as a raw material in industry. We want to exploit this 'green treasure' for Rhineland-Palatinate: the hydrogen study that has just been commissioned and an implementation roadmap for the state will create a solid basis for this,” the minister continued.
The municipalities should be heavily involved in the preparation of the study. As a result, the study should result in an implementation-oriented state hydrogen strategy. A sustainable hydrogen economy in the country is associated with considerable potential. The production of green hydrogen from domestic renewable energy sources increases regional added value, provides additional economic stimulus for both industrial hydrogen users and technology companies, and thus strengthens Rhineland-Palatinate as an economic, innovation, research and science location.
Background:
The hydrogen study with roadmap for Rhineland-Palatinate is intended to analyze the current status of hydrogen production and use in the energy industry, the transport sector, industry as well as research and development in the state. In addition, essential development potential for a sustainable hydrogen economy is identified, realistic expansion goals are set and a practical implementation path for Rhineland-Palatinate is shown via the roadmap. At the same time, the necessary new energy regulations are being determined.

Why solar carports?
The demand for electric vehicles is increasing. The population has increased more than fifty-fold worldwide since 2012. In 2007 there were a total of 8 new registrations of electric cars in Germany. 2019 194,163 new registrations of electric vehicles!
