In Germany, fossil energy consumption accounts for more than 50% for cold and heat. Be it room heating or air conditioning. This includes hot water, process heat (e.g. cooking, washing, burning or welding) and cooling. Renewable energies are now increasingly playing an important role here.

In addition to heat and cold, petroleum is an important component for mobile transportation. Globally, transport accounts for 40% of oil consumption. In the EU it is even more than 60%! The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources assumes that oil will be used up in 40 years if things continue as before.

For this reason alone, a timely rethink is necessary and continuing to compare the emissions of electric cars and combustion engines is not helpful. Electric cars run emission-free. Combustion engines are more environmentally and climate-friendly in their manufacture and production. The current Achilles heel of the electric car is battery production. Another weak point is currently the availability of charging points or charging stations.

However, while the ecological balance of combustion vehicles is almost exhausted, there is still a lot of potential optimization possible for electric vehicles. A life cycle assessment looks at the entire life cycle of a product, from raw material extraction and production through transport and use to disposal. With the expansion of renewable energies, the ecological balance of electric cars will improve and the lead for climate-friendly driving will expand.

Energy and electricity storage are the key to the energy transition, not just to mobility! Research in the field of energy storage is of great importance. It can therefore be expected that in the next few years the more energy-efficient production and development of energy storage devices with ever longer service lives will increase the ecological balance of electric cars, because energy storage devices are needed in all areas of life.

Charging point
A charging point is defined as a facility where only one electric vehicle can be charged at a time. A charging point is public if it is located either in public street space or on private property, provided that the parking space belonging to the charging point can actually be used by an undetermined group of people or who can only be determined according to general characteristics.

What are the most common defects in e-charging stations?

Most common defects of e-charging stations for electric vehicles in Germany - customers are often left in the dark about costs - according to the ADAC test in 2018, a lack of information at the charging station about the costs after charging is the most common defect of e-charging stations in Germany. In some cases, the costs cannot be accessed either at the charging station or in the app after the charging process.

How many providers of charging stations for the charging infrastructure are there?

Normal e-charging stations are the most frequently represented with a total of 37 providers in the area of ​​charging services (as of April 2019). In second place are real-time charging stations, where available charging stations can be accessed in real time via an app (20 providers). This type of service is intended to prevent interested electric vehicle drivers from having range anxiety and ensure that there is always a charging station nearby. The federal state with the highest density of charging stations in Germany is Hamburg.
