Artificial intelligence (AI) has now entered the mainstream. According to a current Bitkom survey, 75 percent of German citizens know what is meant by the term. About the same number have already used a simple application based on AI.
“In just a few years, many products and services will be equipped with or even characterized by machine intelligence,” says Bitkom President Achim Berg. “We have to do everything we can to make the best possible use of the potential of AI for the digital society.” The majority of the approximately 1,000 people surveyed for the study also see opportunities for AI in many areas of life, as the infographic from Statista shows. These include reducing traffic jams, making work easier and solving crimes more quickly.
At the same time, there is still great skepticism about thinking machines. AI opens the door to abuse of power and manipulation, 78 percent fear. There is also a widespread fear that AIs will at some point turn against humans or disempower them.
