Unique advantages in fruit growing
Commercial fruit growing is facing major challenges due to climate change. In order to avoid negative effects on crops, new strategies must be developed to combat rising temperatures and increasingly frequent extreme weather events such as hail and heavy rain. Today, commercial fruit growers are increasingly using films and hail protection nets to avoid losses in quality and yield. PV technology, which has developed dynamically in recent years in the form of semi-transparent, high-mounted modules, can make an important contribution to preventing such climate damage. Such agri-PV systems also help to reduce evaporation and the use of sprays.
The goal for fruit production in the Agri-PV system is safe and high-quality pome fruit production with additional electricity generation. The electrical energy generated should be used in the upstream and downstream areas of fruit production, for example through the use of electrified agricultural machinery, the operation of irrigation systems or when storing the harvest in electrically operated cold storage. By generating electricity at the same time, such systems can be amortized relatively quickly.
Solar power over orchards - double harvest
Growing vegetables or fruit and generating solar power on the same area at the same time – that is the wish of many farmers around the world. And so it is not surprising that there are now many pilot projects in the pipeline. Solar power instead of a hail net over the apple orchard - Germany's first agricultural photovoltaic system went into operation over an existing fruit crop in Kressbronn on Lake Constance. The apples, the environment, the soil and the climate benefit from this.
The Agri-PV pilot system above the apple orchard of the Bernhard fruit farm consists of a metal frame on which solar modules are mounted. These are our particularly stable double glass modules with a transparency of approx. 40%. Thanks to the special installation, the trees receive sufficient light despite the partial shade. The green electricity generated is fed into the network of the energy supplier Regionalwerk Bodensee. Kressbronn is the easternmost municipality in Baden-Württemberg on the northern shore of Lake Constance and lies on the border with Bavaria.
