Generating electricity with solar carports while simultaneously complying with regulatory requirements: The solar panel mandate for open parking areas and parking lots applies particularly to commercial properties . Starting in 2022, this so-called solar carport mandate will apply to all new commercial buildings in Baden-Württemberg (for new non-residential buildings) and North Rhine-Westphalia (for all new commercial buildings).

It is well known that promoting electromobility (environmental bonuses) is key to climate-friendly mobility. This is evident in the considerable increase in new registrations of electric vehicles. However, three further important points are necessary for the successful implementation of emission-free transportation, ensuring a meaningful and genuinely climate-friendly transition from combustion engines to electromobility. As long as electricity still comes from the wall socket, the eco-transition is simply not a true one.

To achieve this, charging infrastructure is just as important as subsidies. However, bottlenecks already exist here. The number of charging points is far from sufficient to keep pace with the growth in electric cars driven by subsidies.
The next step should therefore be to cover the already sealed areas in open parking lots with photovoltaic systems, solar carports.
Prerequisites for a genuine shift to climate-friendly mobility:
- Electric vehicles
- Solar carports
- Charging options
- Energy storage
The electricity generated by the solar parking spaces can either be fed into the grid or stored temporarily – in a battery storage system. The best option must be determined on a case-by-case basis. Ideally, a charging station would be installed at the solar-powered parking spaces, which were once open and are now covered, so that electric vehicles can use their parking time to charge. Despite all the enthusiasm for electromobility, there are still some significant drawbacks compared to conventional combustion engines. These include the relatively long charging time and the shorter range per charge. Since the transition is mandated and all combustion engines must be phased out by 2030, at least in Europe, electromobility will quickly catch up to the technology of combustion engines, which has been optimized over decades.

How readily available are charging points for electric cars from electricity providers?
Survey on the availability of charging options for electric cars by electricity providers – Image: Xpert.Digital
According to a 2019 survey, between 60 and well over 70 percent of respondents could not provide precise information about their electricity provider's charging options for electric cars. This was particularly pronounced regarding "wallboxes," the private charging stations for one's own garage.
Does your electricity provider already offer public charging stations for electric cars?
60% – Don't know/no answer
12.5% – No
27.5% – Yes
Does your electricity provider offer charging stations for your own garage – so-called wallboxes?
77.1% – Don't know/no answer
14.1% – No
8.8% – Yes
How many new electric car registrations are there in Germany?
New registrations of electric cars – Image: Xpert.Digital
The statistics reflect new registrations of purely battery-powered electric cars. The term "electromobility" often encompasses various electric and partially electric drive systems. Battery electric vehicles are powered exclusively by an electric motor, which draws the necessary electrical energy from a traction battery. Plug-in hybrid vehicles, which have both an electric motor and a combustion engine and can only operate partially on electric power, are also generally included under the umbrella term "electromobility.".
- 2003 – 28 electric cars
- 2004 – 61 electric cars
- 2005 – 47 electric cars
- 2006 – 19 electric cars
- 2007 – 8 electric cars
- 2008 – 36 electric cars
- 2009 – 162 electric cars
- 2010 – 541 electric cars
- 2011 – 2,154 electric cars
- 2012 – 2,956 electric cars
- 2013 – 6,051 electric cars
- 2014 – 8,522 electric cars
- 2015 – 12,363 electric cars
- 2016 – 11,410 electric cars
- 2017 – 25,056 electric cars
- 2018 – 36,062 electric cars
- 2019 – 63,281 electric cars
- 2020 – 194,163 electric cars
- 2021 – 115,296 (January to May)
How many new passenger car registrations with alternative drive systems were there in Germany in 2020?

Alternative drive systems are gaining market share: Both hybrid and electric cars have seen increased demand in recent years. Consequently, the share of cars with diesel and gasoline engines is declining.
- Hybrid – 527,864 passenger cars
- Electric – 194,163 passenger cars
- Natural gas – 7,159 passenger cars
- Liquefied petroleum gas – 6,543 passenger cars
How often was the environmental bonus applied for for the different types of electric cars?
Environmental bonuses applied for by type for electric cars in Germany – Image: Xpert.Digital
This statistic shows the number of applications for purchase premiums for electric vehicles, also known as environmental bonuses, by type of electric vehicle drive in Germany (as of June 1, 2021). Eligible for funding is the acquisition (purchase or lease) of an electric vehicle that is being registered for the first time and whose net list price of the base model does not exceed €65,000. As of the specified date, a total of approximately 359,400 environmental bonuses for purely battery-electric vehicles had been applied for in Germany.
- Pure battery electric vehicles – 359,446
- Plug-in hybrids – 282,083
- Fuel cell vehicles – 198
- Total – 641,727
What impact does the charging station network in Germany have on electric vehicles?
Expert survey on the influence of the charging station network on the electric car market – Image: Xpert.Digital
The statistic shows the results of a survey among eMobility experts in Germany who have been working in the field for at least two years. It concerns the impact of expanding the charging station network on the electric vehicle market. In 2018, around 6 percent of the experts surveyed believed that expanding the charging station network had little impact on the German electric vehicle market.
- 70%: It has a strong influence
- 22%: It has some impact on electric vehicles
- 6% % : The charging station network has little influence
- 0%: It has no effect
- 2%: A small percentage don't know
- 0%: Did not provide any information
