Indian software developers and other IT workers are in demand worldwide. report by talent assessment firm Aspiring Minds paints a bleaker picture of the performance of IT engineers in India. According to the report, only 10 percent have sufficient programming knowledge. Only between 3 and 4 percent are suitable for filling roles such as product engineer or startup engineer.
The report concludes that too few Indian engineering students take the time to complete internships or work on projects during their studies. Students gain very few practical skills and are not supported by their faculty to think about real-world applications of engineering, researchers say.
While the picture for Chinese graduates looks equally bleak, a much higher percentage are able to write compilable code, that is, code that can be translated from a programming language to a language read by machines.
The report also says that only 2.5 percent of Indian engineers have knowledge of artificial intelligence, only 4.5 percent have knowledge of data technology and only 5.3 percent have knowledge of mobile technology.
