In technologischer Hinsicht lässt sich die Frage mit Hilfe der gehaltenen Patentfamilien näherungsweise beantworten. Eine Erfindung kann weltweit als Patent angemeldet werden – z.B. in Deutschland, Frankreich und den USA. Das sind dann drei Patente, die aus einer Erfindung stammen und eine Patentfamilie darstellen. Daher ist es in der Patentanalyse in der Regel sinnvoller, statt Patenten Patentfamilien zu zählen. Samsung Electronics besitzt derzeit 1.189 Patentfamilien und ist damit mindestens in quantitativer Hinsicht die Nummer eins. An zweiter Stelle liegt Huawei – das ist auch deswegen interessant, weil die USA derzeit versuchen, dass chinesische Unternehmen mit dem Vorwurf der Spionage aus dem europäischen und amerikanisch 5G-Markt herauszuhalten.

An invention can be filed as a patent worldwide – e.g. in Germany, France and the USA. These are then three patents that originate from an invention and represent a patent family. Therefore, in patent analysis it usually makes more sense to count patent families instead of patents. Samsung Electronics currently owns 1,189 patent families and is therefore at least quantitatively number one. In second place is Huawei – this is also interesting because the USA is currently trying to keep Chinese companies out of the European and American 5G market with accusations of espionage.
