Vor 15 Jahren haben Tech-Unternehmen im Ranking der höchsten Marktkapitalisierung noch eine kleine Rolle gespielt. 2005 konnte sich nur Microsoft zwischen Größen aus Finanzwesen, Einzelhandel und Öl einreihen. Damals war General Electric mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von rund 382 Milliarden US-Dollar das wertvollste Unternehmen der Welt.
Wie die Grafik zeigt, wird die Unternehmenslandschaft 2020 von Tech-Giganten dominiert und die Beträge von 2005 erscheinen verschwindend gering. Allein Microsoft hat in den letzten 15 Jahren seinen Wert auf 1,6 Billionen US-Dollar versechsfacht. Das Unternehmen von Bill Gates wird aber sogar noch von Amazon, Saudi Aramco und Apple übertrumpft. Letzteres Unternehmen konnte erst kürzlich die Zwei-Billionen-Grenze überschreiten und den arabischen Öl-Riesen Saudi Aramco als wertvollsten Konzern weltweit ablösen.
Der Boom in der Tech-Industrie ist vor allem der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung und der Entwicklung von Smartphones zu verdanken. An Handys, wie wir sie heute kennen und täglich nutzen, war 2005 noch nicht zu denken. Gerade junge Tech-Firmen wie Facebook (2004 gegründet) haben deutlich von der rasanten Entwicklung und Möglichkeit der Vernetzung von Menschen auf der ganzen Welt profitiert.

In 2005, only Microsoft was able to place itself between the big players in finance, retail and oil. At that time, General Electric was the most valuable company in the world with a market capitalization of around 382 billion US dollars.
As the chart shows, the corporate landscape in 2020 will be dominated by tech giants, and the 2005 figures appear to be negligible. Microsoft alone has increased its value six-fold over the last 15 years to 1.6 trillion US dollars. But Bill Gates‘ company is even trumped by Amazon, Saudi Aramco and Apple. The latter company recently broke the two trillion barrier and replaced the Arab oil giant Saudi Aramco as the most valuable corporation worldwide.
The boom in the tech industry is mainly due to the advancing digitalization and the development of smartphones. In 2005, cell phones as we know them today and use them every day were still out of the question. Young tech companies such as Facebook (founded in 2004) in particular have benefited significantly from the rapid development and opportunities for networking people around the world.
