From entertainment and productivity to healthcare applications, these technologies are opening up entirely new possibilities for interaction between the digital and real worlds. XR is characterized by its ability to blur the boundary between reality and the simulated world by immersing users visually, audibly, or haptically into another dimension. This report provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse applications of modern XR technologies, current product developments, and future prospects.

Suitable for:

Entertainment: Immersive experiences for gaming and media consumption

The entertainment sector is one of the driving forces behind XR development, with particularly innovative solutions emerging for gaming and media consumption.

Gaming with XR glasses and virtual displays

The gaming industry benefits significantly from XR technologies. Modern AR glasses like the VITURE Pro XR allow the use of virtually any gaming handheld or other device, as long as it has a USB-C display output. This enables users to connect the Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion GO, ASUS ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch, and numerous other devices to the glasses. The unique feature of these glasses is their ability to create a large-format virtual display, providing the user with a more immersive gaming experience.

Virtual cinema and streaming experiences

Video glasses like the Lenovo Legion Glasses and Viture One XR transform personal media consumption into a cinema-like experience. When you put these glasses on and turn them on, a virtual screen appears that looks as large as an 80-inch TV from three meters away. The Viture One even offers 3D functionality at the touch of a button. This technology not only enables a more immersive viewing experience but also offers practical advantages:

  • Larger screen area than portable game consoles or smartphones
  • Relief for the neck through freer body posture
  • Privacy through personal display, especially useful on public transport

Productivity: XR as a tool for more efficient work processes

In the area of productivity, XR technologies are increasingly being used in various industries and are revolutionizing established work processes.

Logistics and order picking

Augmented reality is playing an increasingly important role in logistics, particularly in process optimization. In order picking, the process of assembling items from the warehouse for customer or production orders, AR smart glasses can significantly simplify the work. Employees can scan markings or QR codes on shelves and receive information in real time directly in their field of vision through the smart glasses.

The so-called “Vision Picking” technology combines augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to enable a seamless order picking process. Employees receive guided visual cues on their smart glasses while working. Any errors are immediately highlighted and can be corrected, thus avoiding costly returns.

Manufacturing and Industry

In the manufacturing industry, XR is fundamentally transforming product development, maintenance, and training. Virtual prototypes accelerate product development by allowing engineers to design and test products in virtual environments instead of building physical models. This not only saves time and resources but also enables faster iteration.

Augmented reality is proving to be a game-changer for maintenance and repair. Technicians can access real-time data and visual instructions while working on machines thanks to AR glasses. This increase in efficiency not only leads to cost savings but also to higher plant availability.

Employee training also benefits from XR technologies. Virtual training environments make it possible to practice complex processes without blocking expensive machinery or exposing oneself to danger.

XR Collaboration: Virtual Collaboration

Compared to traditional video conferencing, XR collaboration technology creates a stronger sense of closeness and team spirit. Participants are together in a virtual space and perceive themselves and others as avatars. This creates an immersion that fosters a more intense social connection and enables more pleasant and social collaboration than conventional screen sharing.

Suitable for:

Navigation: AR as a guide in road traffic

XR technologies are also revolutionizing navigation and increasing road safety through innovative display systems.

Augmented reality head-up displays

The Augmented Reality Head-up Display (AR-HuD) represents a further development of conventional head-up displays. Unlike traditional HUDs, the virtual warning signals and information appear across the driver's entire field of vision. The unique feature is that the projections merge with reality: navigation arrows are projected directly onto the road, pointing, for example, precisely to the street into which the driver intends to turn.

This technology significantly enhances safety, as the driver doesn't need to take their eyes off the road. In addition to navigation information, warnings are also displayed: as soon as the lane keeping assist or adaptive cruise control detects hazards, these are visualized in red or orange. Furthermore, the system also shows the current speed, speed limits, and other relevant warnings such as "pedestrians crossing".

ID. Augmented reality navigation from Volkswagen

Volkswagen has developed an advanced solution with the AR head-up display in its ID. models, which merges information directly into reality within the driver's field of vision. The system's core component, the Picture Generation Unit, generates beams of light that are projected onto the windshield via a complex mirror system.

A particular challenge with this technology is the correct placement of the virtual elements in relation to the real environment. For this, one of the central computers in the vehicle calculates the position of the symbols using data from the front camera, radar sensor, and the car's navigation map.

Digital Transformation: XR Technologies as the Key for Now and Tomorrow

Health: Monitoring and improving well-being

In the health sector, XR technologies and wearables open up new possibilities for monitoring and improving well-being.

Suitable for:

Wearables for health monitoring

Wearable devices are becoming increasingly important in healthcare. One key application is the early detection of diseases through continuous monitoring of vital signs. Modern smartwatches with integrated ECG functionality can detect potential heart rhythm disturbances in time, allowing users to seek medical advice early.

Wearable devices are particularly valuable for patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Bluetooth blood pressure monitors and ECG sensors allow data to be transmitted directly to treating physicians, enabling intensive monitoring without frequent doctor's visits.

Blood glucose measurement with smartwatches

For people with diabetes, regularly monitoring their blood sugar levels is vital. Smartwatches that can measure blood sugar would therefore be a great help. However, no smartwatches with reliable blood sugar measurement are currently available. The models that are available so far only provide imprecise indications.

According to their own statements, well-known smartwatch manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi are working on methods to measure blood sugar levels directly on the wrist. This usually involves an optical sensor that can measure blood sugar levels non-invasively, i.e., without pricking the fingertip.

VR in medicine

Virtual reality has already found widespread applications in medicine. It improves the training of medical personnel, enables more precise diagnoses through 3D imaging, serves as an effective pain therapy, and supports rehabilitation. In psychotherapy, VR helps in the treatment of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The human body is incredibly complex, and doctors need to understand this system. This is where virtual reality comes in: Thanks to realistic VR simulations, doctors and medical staff can improve their skills and virtually experience and train in complex medical scenarios to act more efficiently and safely in real-world clinical practice.

Communication: XR as a bridge between languages and cultures

XR technologies are playing an increasingly important role in overcoming language barriers and improving communication.

AI-powered real-time translation

Google is working on AR glasses that can recognize speech in real time and display it as translated subtitles. The technology could offer enormous advantages for travel, conversations with international colleagues, and especially for deaf people in everyday life. However, it is still an early prototype.

Other manufacturers have also developed solutions: The Zoi Meet app on the Vuzix Blade AR glasses supports real-time translations in twelve languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. This marks the debut of the first collaboration on the market to support multilingual communication in real time using AR glasses.

Virtual meetings and conferences

XR technologies enable improved virtual meetings and strengthen the sense of presence. Compared to traditional video conferencing, XR collaboration technology creates a stronger feeling of closeness and team spirit. Participants are together in a virtual space and perceive themselves and others as avatars, resulting in a more intense social connection.

Sports and outdoor activities: Special XR solutions for active people

Increasingly specialized XR glasses are being developed for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, meeting the specific requirements of this target group.

Meta and Oakley: Smart Glasses for Athletes

Meta is collaborating with Oakley on a new pair of smart glasses called “Supernova 2”, specifically designed for athletes such as cyclists. A unique feature of these glasses is the placement of the camera directly in the bridge, resulting in a more discreet design.

Even more impressive is the planned high-end model, codenamed “Hypernova,” which integrates a display in the lower third of the right lens. This allows notifications, photos, or apps to be displayed directly in the field of vision—a feature that represents a first step toward augmented reality. The Hypernova is expected to cost around $1,000.

The new smart glasses are to be controlled via touch-sensitive temples or a special smartwatch codenamed “Ceres”, which Meta could launch alongside Hypernova.

Future developments: Artemis and other innovations

Meta plans to launch the “Artemis,” the first fully-fledged AR glasses, in 2027. Unlike current models, Artemis will not require a smartphone to run apps – all functions will run directly on the glasses.

Furthermore, Meta is apparently also working on headphones intended to compete with Apple's AirPods Pro. A special feature of this device is said to be built-in cameras that, thanks to artificial intelligence, can recognize and describe objects in the environment.

The future of XR technologies

The development of XR technologies is progressing rapidly and promises to bring about even more profound changes in various areas of life in the coming years.

Android XR: Google's new VR platform

Google has unveiled Android XR, a new platform slated to launch and become available on the first devices sometime in 2025. This platform boasts two key strengths: First, it's a full-fledged Android system, meaning a comprehensive ecosystem of apps and features will be available right from the start.

The second major strength is Gemini, Google's AI assistant, designed to accompany users in virtual and AR spaces. Gemini is intended to analyze everything seen, answer questions, display information, and be a faithful companion, providing both visual and audible support.

Suitable for:

Streaming solutions for XR

The NVIDIA CloudXR suite, combined with the power of NVIDIA RTX GPUs, enables high-fidelity XR applications to be streamed to various devices over high-performance networks. CloudXR dynamically adapts to network conditions, maximizing image quality and frame rates, thus enabling next-generation wireless AR and VR experiences.

This technology breaks down the limitations of conventional VR and AR systems, enabling the streaming of XR content to disconnected devices with high fidelity. Complex VR and AR experiences can thus be transmitted from a remote server to any device via 5G and Wi-Fi networks, without the constraints of cables.

FXR as a key technology for digital transformation

XR technologies have evolved from purely entertainment applications into versatile tools used in numerous fields. From the entertainment industry to productivity applications and navigation, and from health monitoring to communication, VR, AR, and MR are opening up new possibilities for interaction between humans and machines, as well as between the digital and real worlds.

Ongoing miniaturization, more powerful hardware, and improved streaming technologies will enable even more immersive and seamless XR experiences in the coming years. Developments in AR glasses are particularly promising, as they are becoming increasingly suitable for everyday use and offer new application possibilities in various scenarios – from gaming and work support to sports.

While some technologies, such as blood glucose monitoring via smartwatches, are still in their infancy, the numerous advances in other areas demonstrate the enormous potential of XR for the digital transformation of our society. The boundary between the real and digital worlds will increasingly blur, and XR technologies will play a key role in this.
