Technology giants and the battle for the XR market

Extended Reality in Focus: The Strategies of the Big Players

The world of extended reality (XR) has evolved from a distant promise to a tangible reality, with the world's largest technology companies vying for dominance in this emerging market. Meta, Apple, Google, Samsung, and Amazon have intensified their strategies and are investing heavily in the development of innovative AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), and XR (Extended Reality) technologies. The following report analyzes the current state of this competition, based on the latest developments and announcements.

The current state of the XR market

XR technology encompasses virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, each fundamentally changing how we interact with the digital world. Economic forecasts indicate impressive growth potential: MarketsandMarkets predicts the VR market will reach $38 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.1%. Mordor Intelligence even anticipates a market volume of $187.4 billion by 2030, representing a CAGR of 42.05%.

A key factor for the future spread of VR is the decreasing cost of hardware. The average price of a VR headset is expected to fall from around $400 in 2022 to approximately $200 in 2025. This price reduction could make the technology accessible to a wider audience and accelerate its adoption.

The strategies of the big tech companies

Google and Samsung: A powerful alliance

Google has introduced Android XR, a new operating system for augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality. This system was developed in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm. The platform is already available to developers as a preview and supports ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR.

Samsung has simultaneously announced its first VR headset based on Android XR, codenamed “Project Moohan.” Moohan, Korean for “infinity,” is slated for release in 2025 and is powered by Qualcomm’s premium Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. The device will offer color passthrough, be designed for mixed reality, and feature eye-tracking capabilities for UI navigation.

Samsung is also developing controllers for its XR headset. These will not be included in the package, but offered as optional accessories, especially for applications such as gaming.

Meta: 2025 as a pivotal year

Meta has announced Meta Connect 2025 for September 17th and 18th, 2025. At this event, the company aims to “unveil the latest and greatest Meta Horizon updates, unveil the technology of tomorrow, and provide XR developers with the tools they need.”.

Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta, describes 2025 as “the most critical year” for the company’s XR efforts. In an internal memo titled “2025: The Year of Greatness,” he writes: “This year will likely determine whether this entire [XR] effort will go down in history as the work of visionaries or as a legendary mishap.”.

Meta plans to release “half a dozen new AI wearables” in 2025, including presumably AI glasses from Oakley, high-end glasses with a small contextual display, and a neural wristband for control. The Meta Quest 3S is also considered a touchstone for the entire VR industry.

Apple: Premium strategy with Vision Pro

Apple has already launched the Vision Pro, a mixed-reality headset that, with a price of $3,499, clearly positions itself in the premium segment. Apple's strategy focuses on productivity and high-quality experiences.

The Cupertino-based company is thus pursuing a different approach than Meta, whose Quest 3 is available for $500. According to media reports, Apple employees are "confident" that they will bring the better gadget to market with the Vision Pro, despite challenges such as the weight of the glasses and the high
price.

Amazon: The rising challenger

Amazon is investing heavily in AR and VR technologies and building a dedicated team. The company has advertised numerous positions in areas such as computer vision, design, product management, and research.

A job posting states: “You will develop an advanced XR research concept into a magical and useful, unprecedented consumer product.” What specific XR product Amazon is planning is not yet known. So far, the company only offers the Echo Frames audio glasses, which, however, do not have a display.

Furthermore, Amazon already uses AI technologies to improve the shopping experience, such as with the AI chatbot Rufus, which suggests possible future integrations with XR technologies.

Suitable for:

Technological developments and platform strategies

The competition between the tech giants also manifests itself in the form of different platforms and operating systems. Meta has its own operating system (based on Android), Google is introducing Android XR, and Apple uses its realityOS.

Apple and Google's platform strategy is effective: the mobile use of AR allows developer communities to collaborate, create added value for various industries, and familiarize themselves with new UX design systems for AR applications. This leads to the establishment of long-term standards and platform dependencies.

A key technological advancement is the integration of AI into XR applications. Project Moohan, for example, relies entirely on the integration of Gemini AI, which enables contextual interactions. Meta and Apple are also integrating AI features into their XR products.

Competition for market share and pricing strategies

The various companies pursue different pricing and market strategies:

  • Apple is positioning itself in the premium segment with the Vision Pro (US$3,499)
  • Meta offers more affordable options with the Quest 3 (US$500) and the new Quest 3S (€350)
  • Samsung and Google are aiming for a price with Project Moohan that is “significantly lower” than that of the Apple Vision Pro

This price differentiation reflects the different target groups and market positioning. While Apple targets premium users and professionals, Meta tries to reach a broader market, especially in the gaming sector.

Outlook for 2025: The decisive year for XR

2025 is expected to be a pivotal year for the XR industry. With the launch of Samsung's and Google's mixed reality headsets, the previous two-horse race between Meta and Apple will become a three-way battle that will shape the industry for years to come.

The trend is toward premium headsets and ultra-lightweight experimental devices with high-resolution OLED micro-displays. Furthermore, more surprises could follow later this year, possibly from Valve or other manufacturers.

An intense competition with an open outcome

The battle for dominance in the AR/VR/XR market is in full swing, and the major tech companies have significantly intensified their strategies. Meta, Apple, Google, Samsung, and Amazon are investing heavily in the development of new technologies and products.

The year 2025 will be a pivotal one for the industry, revealing which approaches and technologies will prevail. Consumers stand to benefit from this competition, as it will lead to lower prices, more innovative products, and wider availability of XR technologies.

Whether virtual reality, augmented reality, or mixed reality will ultimately prevail as the dominant technology remains to be seen. It is likely that different application areas will favor different technologies, potentially creating a diverse ecosystem in which multiple companies can thrive.
