In a survey on the leading e-commerce logistics provider in Germany, 52 percent of respondents stated that Amazon.de is the market leader – unsurprisingly. DHL.de follows with 14 percent. The gap is considerable. Amazon.de also holds a commanding lead in customer service, with a remarkable 48 percent, far ahead of Zalando.de with 12 percent. Otto.de follows with 6 percent and Rewe.de with 2 percent.
Which company in the German e-commerce sector do you consider to be the market leader in terms of logistics?
- Amazon.de – 52%
- DHL.de – 14%
- Zalando.de – 8%
- Otto.de – 5%
- Notebooksbilliger.de – 1%
- Alternate.de – 1%
- Other – 7%
- I don't know – 7%
- No information provided – 5%
Another example is the relevance of drones in logistics. For 36% of respondents, drones have very little relevance, while for 21% and 22% respectively, they have moderate to low relevance. Technologies like RFID, drones, and other, undoubtedly innovative, ideas should always be kept in mind, but it's also important to assess whether they make sense for one's own company and offer added value. It also depends on the specific question being asked and, above all, on the industry or product type.

- We offer organizational and planning ideas, all the way to turnkey solutions.
E-commerce is the benchmark for logistics in terms of automation and digitalization
Automating such processes is only part of the solution. Structures and management must also be examined. But above all, it is important that humans do not lose control and oversight.
Logistics consulting & used machinery: Is it worthwhile to buy second-hand warehouse logistics, storage lifts or carousel storage systems?
Without a doubt, modern equipment for the efficient handling of intralogistics processes in warehouses is ideally suited to the constant stresses and demands of continuous operation. The robust construction of horizontal carousel storage systems or vertical storage lift systems is designed for a long service life, which, in addition to their efficiency in process handling, makes them a system solution increasingly sought after by companies.
However, this very durability also makes it attractive to the used machinery market; the devices can usually be dismantled relatively quickly and reassembled at a different location. The software that controls them is also designed for easy integration into existing warehouse management systems.

History of intralogistics
Logistics in the 1850s / History of intralogistics – Image: Xpert.Digital / Stocksnapper|Shutterstock.com
Although the terms "material flow" and "intralogistics" were certainly not used when supplying the stone blocks for the construction of the pyramids, the tasks associated with these concepts have been carried out for millennia. Initially, there was no automation whatsoever, but with the invention of the wheel, the first technical aid was used to manage logistical processes. The primary source of logistical tasks was usually the military, which, since antiquity, had demanded the efficient transport of materials and soldiers. Large-scale construction projects with logistical demands, such as the building of the pyramids, were still rather the exception. The technology used changed little over the following centuries, and it was only with the advent of industrialization that progress began to make its way into logistics.

Planning photovoltaics on warehouses, commercial buildings and industrial buildings

Whether flat roof or pitched roof, all without roof penetrations.
Politicians are getting serious; the new climate protection law, the centerpiece of the Green Deal , is driving measures and developments forward. Legal regulations requiring photovoltaic systems for new commercial buildings are already in effect in some German states.
What does "roof penetration-free" mean?
With roof-penetration-free photovoltaic roof mounting, no holes need to be drilled through the roof or any other interventions made. Sloping gable and shed roofs covered with bitumen or membrane roofing could previously only be installed with great difficulty or at very high cost without roof penetration.

Logistical acceleration of e-commerce and a turbo boost for smart cities
E-commerce, initially ridiculed and neglected, has not only transformed the global world but also the internet into a "local" shopping center, while simultaneously completely changing our habits and expectations.
Without digital platforms, our world as we know it today would be unimaginable. Who still remembers going to the video store when now we simply pick up the remote and access Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and all the other online video services? Many people book their trips almost exclusively online and don't even bother going to the local travel agency. And of course, we already order a large portion of our gifts, gadgets, and other accessories online, including from Amazon, eBay, and Google.

Lessons learned from the crisis: Logistics as a key factor

The COVID-19 pandemic is inevitably accelerating digital transformation, particularly in key industries—those sectors of immense economic importance due to their innovative strength, size, and interconnections with other industries. Logistics is at the forefront of this shift: although many companies have scaled back production, logistics must maintain supply chains and the flow of goods. However, while new work models like working from home and virtual meetings have become widespread in other sectors, the supply chain continues to struggle with digitalization. There simply isn't enough time to adapt all capacities and inventories to the new challenges. This is all the more significant given the shift in consumer behavior, as evidenced by the temporary shortages of numerous items such as toilet paper, disposable gloves, and disinfectants. The interconnectedness of ordering, planning, production, and delivery was disrupted.

When do automated intralogistics solutions make sense in e-commerce?
E-commerce has transformed supply chains, and speed and precision are paramount. Modern intralogistics based on digitalization and automation is therefore essential to remain competitive in this increasingly fierce market. And digitalization is by no means simply a matter of switching from paper to electronic invoicing. To stay competitive, companies need ever more intelligent intralogistics systems. This applies both to courier, express, and parcel (CEP) servicesthat handle shipping and returns, and to internal logistics, including warehousing and order picking.
The trend here is toward ever-increasing automation. Industry leader Amazon with its acquisition of the US company Kiva Systems . This innovative and highly flexible intralogistics solution uses mini-robots to automatically transport shelves to picking stations. Admittedly, it's a large-scale solution that isn't suitable for every company. But smaller-scale options are also available. For example, the use of shuttle systems in the warehouse offers smaller retailers a way to automate their processes.
