And one thing is certain: the market will continue to grow. But the TRENDS experts are looking further ahead, always on the lookout for the next big hype. Because one thing is certain: the development of wearables doesn't end with smartwatches. Engineers from all over the world are already working hard to bring the displays even closer to the body. This includes the recently introduced skin displays, which are made from an extremely thin and stretchable fabric. This ultra-thin material clings to the wearer like a second skin. With its sensory properties, it can already measure the pulse and display it directly on its surface.
It's not quite there yet, but perhaps the next step will be the integration of a display made of a similarly stretchable material, capable of receiving and displaying high-resolution content. Combined with gesture or swipe controls, this would be a first step towards replacing the smartphone. The bulky gloves and controllers of the VR scene could also soon be a thing of the past, as an invention called "e-skin" has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with our environment.
An extremely thin electronic magnetic sensor, worn like a second skin, is attached to the palm of the hand. An external magnetic field detects the exact position of the hand in space, giving gesture control a completely new level of quality. Unimaginable? Certainly not, when you consider that eleven years ago nobody foresaw the dawning smartphone era.
