Vision “Skin Display” – What comes after Smartwatch and Co.?

Interactive Skin Displays – The successor to smartphones and smartwatches?

The creators of Xpert.Digital ponder the trends of the future

Smart watches and bracelets are increasingly becoming competitors to smartphones, as these little digital helpers are increasingly turning into constant companions with which users can receive messages, make phone calls, go online or check their fitness.

In addition to smartwatches and fitness trackers, smart glasses with integrated cameras are also a trend that will shape the future. More than 150 million wearables were sold worldwide in 2016. And one thing is certain: the market will continue to grow. With the successful implementation of smart AR & VR concepts, the Xpert.Digital team has already proven its expertise in this rapidly growing area several times.

But the TRENDS experts look further and are always looking for the next big hype. One thing is also certain: the development of wearables does not stop with smartwatches. Technicians from all over the world are already working hard to bring the displays even closer to the body. These include the recently introduced skin displays, which were developed from an extremely thin and stretchy material. This is an ultra-thin fabric that hugs the wearer like a second skin. With its sensory properties, it can already measure the pulse and display it directly on its surface.

It's not there yet, but the next step might be the integration of a display made of similarly stretchable material that can receive and display high-resolution content. Combined with control via gestures or swiping movements, this would be a first step towards replacing the smartphone. The clunky gloves or controllers of the VR scene could soon be over, because an invention known as “e-skin” has what it takes to revolutionize the way we interact with our environment.

To do this, an extremely thin electronic magnetic sensor that can be worn as a second skin is glued to the palm of the hand. The exact position of the hand in space is recorded using an external magnetic field, which gives gesture control a whole new quality. Inconceivably? Certainly not, considering that eleven years ago no one foresaw the approaching smartphone era.

Given all these innovations, some people will be wondering what comes next. Implants that display communication directly via images on the iris or by playing sounds into the ear canal? One thing is certain: the specialists at Xpert.Digital will report on it.
