According to a recent TechRepublic report , major US tech companies are apparently unable to meet their skilled labor needs domestically. This is suggested by the significant increase in H-1B visa applications last year. This special work permit allows US companies to employ highly qualified foreign workers. The trend is particularly evident in the case of Amazon. The number of approved H-1B visa applications for the company rose by 78 percent in 2017 to 2,515. Facebook (+53 percent), Google (+31 percent), and Microsoft (+29 percent) have also significantly intensified their recruitment efforts abroad.
