Stuttgart has the fastest network

Stuttgart's LTE network achieves download speeds of 34.8 Mbps, according to a measurement conducted by OpenSignal in Germany's largest cities. Düsseldorf and Leipzig follow in second and third place, respectively. Berlin's 4G network only manages seventh place. Frankfurt, Germany's financial capital, fares worst. Overall, mobile internet in major German cities is significantly better than the national average, which only manages 29th place out of 69 countries surveyed (see below).

Germany needs more download speed

A recent report by OpenSignal puts the average download speed of mobile internet connections in Germany at 19.3 Mbps . This is only enough for 29th place out of 69 countries surveyed. South Korea leads the way, followed by Norway and Singapore. An expansion of the mobile network infrastructure therefore seems urgently needed. However, there is little indication that anything will happen anytime soon. The rollout of LTE in Germany was comparatively late and slow, and it is not currently expected that the 5G network rollout will be any different.

5G is on the verge of a breakthrough

The LTE (4G) network in Germany is less than a decade old, and already a new mobile communications standard is on the horizon. 5G – one of the major topics at this year's MWC – is expected to offer data rates 100 times higher than today's 4G networks – that would be up to 10,000 Mbps. But it will likely be some time before the new mobile technology reaches consumers' smartphones. The current Ericsson Mobility Report projects only four million 5G mobile connections worldwide for 2019. After that, however, things are expected to move very quickly: by 2023, there should be around one billion 5G mobile connections – 118 million of them in Western Europe.
