Aleph Alpha strengthens sovereign AI with the acquisition of Thingsthinking

Aleph Alpha joins forces with Thingsthinking for an innovative AI platform

German AI company Aleph Alpha has announced the acquisition of Karlsruhe-based speech software specialist Thingsthinking to expand its offering of sovereign AI solutions, particularly for clients in the industrial and financial sectors. The strategic acquisition aims to integrate Thingsthinking's semantic text processing capabilities into Aleph Alpha's PhariaAI platform.

Details of the takeover

Aleph Alpha, the Heidelberg-based AI company, officially announced the acquisition of Thingsthinking on April 24, 2025. The transaction is a so-called "acqui-hire," a term derived from the English words "acquire" and "hire," and refers to an acquisition where the focus is primarily on the expertise of the employees.

The contracts were reportedly signed the week before Easter, although the official announcement came later. According to a person familiar with the matter, Aleph Alpha paid a single-digit million euro sum for the acquisition. This is Aleph Alpha's second acquisition, following the Berlin-based AI startup Lengoo.

The companies involved and their technologies

Aleph Alpha: Germany's largest AI developer

Aleph Alpha positions itself as Germany's largest developer of artificial intelligence for public authorities and businesses. Founded in 2019, the company specializes in developing sovereign AI solutions that enable businesses and public authorities to automate their processes without losing control over their data. At the heart of its offering is the PhariaAI platform, which facilitates the development, operation, and scaling of generative AI applications.

The company particularly emphasizes the promise of "sovereignty," meaning that customers retain control over their own data and can develop their own AI expertise. One of Aleph Alpha's most prominent clients is the German Federal Employment Agency.

Thingsthinking: Specialist for semantic text processing

Thingsthinking was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) by Sven Körner, Mathias Landhäußer, Georg Müller, and Abdelmalik El Guesaoui. The company specializes in natural language processing using artificial intelligence and raised approximately €4.5 million in a funding round in 2021, including investment from the venture capital firm Earlybird, which also has a stake in Aleph Alpha.

Thingsthinking's main product is the software "Semantha," which specializes in semantics and can grasp the meaning of texts regardless of the specific wording. "Our software understands natural language regardless of the word choice. It is able to read large amounts of text and find the desired content, no matter how it was formulated," explained Thingsthinking founder Sven Körner in a previous interview.

The software is used in areas such as contract review, requirements management, and technical documentation. According to the company, its customers include firms from the automotive, chemical, insurance, and financial services industries, including BASF, Hella, and HDI.

Strategic reasons for the acquisition

The merger pursues several strategic goals. According to Aleph Alpha's official announcement, the acquisition is intended to "further expand the offering in the area of enterprise-specific, sovereign AI, particularly for customers in the industrial and financial sectors." The AI software and the team from Thingsthinking would "ideally complement" the AI startup's portfolio.

Christopher Kränzler, Vice President of Product at Aleph Alpha and former founder of Lengoo, emphasizes that Thingsthinking's capabilities and industry expertise expand Aleph Alpha's potential to "support customers in industry and financial services in the AI-driven transformation of their processes." The goal is to enable organizations to use generative AI in regulated, data-intensive sectors.

The acquisition also strengthens Aleph Alpha's position in competition with international AI providers, as the company expands its technology portfolio by adding Thingsthinking's semantic text processing technology.

Integration and future plans

The integration of the Semantha platform into Aleph Alpha's PhariaAI solution is intended to automate text-based workflows while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Aleph Alpha announced that it will also grant existing Thingsthinking customers access to its own AI operating system, PhariaAI, and the Pharia Industrial Suite in the future.

The systems are designed to be operated both in the cloud and on-premises, with Aleph Alpha stating that data sovereignty remains entirely with the companies. This aligns with Aleph Alpha's focus on data sovereignty and security.

Semantha's powerful text analytics are designed to simplify complex, data-intensive processes such as requirements management and contract review. By integrating with Aleph Alpha's PhariaAI solution, companies benefit from new, innovative features while maintaining legal compliance and the highest security standards.

Significance for Germany as an AI location

The merger of two leading AI companies from Baden-Württemberg strengthens the regional ecosystem and underscores the region's growing importance as a leading innovation hub for AI. With the addition of the Thingsthinking team and the integration of their solutions, Aleph Alpha further expands its role as a pioneer of sovereign AI and supports organizations in building sustainable, independent AI capabilities.

This acquisition is part of a trend, as other technology companies such as the Munich-based AI startup Audeering, the outdoor app Komoot, and the Urban Sports Club platform have also changed ownership this year. The number of such acquisitions has risen steadily in recent years.

Aleph Alpha strengthens Germany's AI sector through the acquisition of Thingsthinking

Aleph Alpha's acquisition of Thingsthinking marks a significant step in the consolidation of the German AI market. It underscores Aleph Alpha's strategy of expanding its technology portfolio through targeted acquisitions and solidifying its position as a leading provider of sovereign AI solutions in Germany. The integration of Thingsthinking's semantic text processing technology into the PhariaAI platform promises innovative solutions for industry and finance, while simultaneously ensuring data sovereignty and security.

For Germany as an AI hub, this development represents a further strengthening of its position, as it promotes the innovative capacity and competitiveness of German companies in the international AI race. It remains to be seen how the integration of the two companies will play out in practice and what new solutions will emerge from it.
