The United States has one of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) markets in the world. Some of the earliest research into solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar energy was conducted in the United States. For example, the first silicon solar cell was developed in the USA. Solar photovoltaics convert light directly from the sun into electricity. Solar energy is actually one of the most abundant energy resources in the world. The potential for solar energy utilization varies widely across the country, with southern states such as California and Arizona having much higher levels of direct sunlight than other regions, which is largely reflected in the installed solar PV capacity in the United States. In addition to better solar resources, southwestern states also have higher solar capacity factors. Capacity factor is a measure based on a facility's electricity production as a percentage of its summer capacity value.

Demand for solar energy is higher than ever as consumers continue to turn away from traditional energy sources. The declining prices of solar energy make it an economically advantageous choice for both commercial and residential owners. Several states continue to encourage solar installations through various solar policies. Many systems use net metering, in which electricity generated during the day is fed into the power grid in the evening. The improved ability of new solar technologies to capture more energy has also made solar PV more economically viable. The performance of solar power plants is generally determined by the quality of the solar resources, the tracking options and the size of the inverters.
