Mobile World Congress 2025: Samsung reveals revolutionary headset

Samsungs Project Moohan: New standards for extended reality

The first-time presentation of Samsung's first extended reality headset, known as Project Moohan, is expected to be awaited at the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. The device, which was developed in cooperation with Google and is based on the new Android XR operating system, promises to redefine the boundaries between virtual and real world by advanced AI integration. The first insights indicate high -quality hardware with numerous cameras, external battery pack and innovative control options. Samsung is strategically positioning itself against established competitors such as Apple and Meta in the growing market for mixed reality technologies.

The development history of Project Moohan

Project Moohan's journey began a few months ago when Samsung gave the first indications of an independent XR headset in cooperation with Google in December 2024. The code name “Moohan” comes from the Korean and means “infinity” or “unlimited” - a suitable metaphor for the company's ambitions in the expanded reality. This naming underlines Samsung's vision of a limitless virtual experience that is to be made possible by the technology.

In January 2025, the device was presented to the public for the first time at the Galaxy Unpacked Event, but only behind barriers and without ways to interact. This reserved presentation aroused the interest of the tech community without revealing too many details. Samsung thus followed a strategy similar to the introduction of the Galaxy Ring, which was also initially only exhibited for view.

The complete unveiling is now planned for March 3, 2025 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Visitors to the fair will have the opportunity to try the headset at the Samsung Galaxy Experience in the Fira Gran via Halle 3 and get their own picture of the skills of the device. This hands-on experience will enable a deeper insight into the performance and user-friendliness of Project Moohan.

Technical specifications and design

Project Moohan is characterized by high-quality hardware components that clearly position Samsung in the premium segment. In the heart of the headset, the powerful Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor from Qualcomm works, which is currently the leading chip for VR applications. This processor promises an extremely low latency of up to 12 milliseconds, which is crucial for natural -looking interactions in the virtual environment.

The optical system of the headset is based on OLED microdisplays with high refresh rate, which ensure liquid and realistic representations. The pancake lenses used should enable a more compact form factor, even if, according to the first reports, the field of vision and the sharpness may remain behind the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3. For glasses wearers, the system offers the option of attaching correction lenses.

A particularly striking feature is the variety of cameras with which the headset is equipped. At least eight front cameras support the precise inside-out tracking and enable passenthrough functions, while two additional cameras are reserved for eye tracking. This technology not only allows navigation through eye movements, but also the automatic adjustment of the lens distance and the so -called foveated rendering, in which only the area focused by the user is rendered in full resolution.

The design of Project Moohan is reminiscent of a mixture of Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest Pro, with an elegant glass and aluminum front. In contrast to the Vision Pro, Samsung does not use the eye-up feature, which projects the user's eyes to the outside world. An integrated headband with built -in headphones, generous upholstery and a size that can be adjusted via a knurled screw on the back.

An interesting technical detail is the active cooling system with two air inlets and an air outlet that indicates the powerful and heat -intensive hardware. The power supply takes place via an external battery pack that is connected via USB-C, with an end to the cable via a USB-C connection and the other via a proprietary connection.

Suitable for:

Software ecosystem and AI integration

Project Moohan will be the first device to use Google's new Android XR operating system, a version of Android, especially for XR devices such as headsets and glasses. This platform is intended to form the basis for a flourishing ecosystem of facial computers, similar to Android for smartphones. Google has already announced other partners such as Sony, Lynx and Xreal who also want to launch devices with Android XR.

The integration of Google's multimodal AI assistant Gemini, which is used in an advanced version on the headset, plays a central role in the user experience. This AI can process language, pictures and spatial information and should enable more context -conscious and more personalized experiences. The ability to understand the immediate environment and react to it is advertised as an essential advantage over conventional AR/VR experiences.

Google has already optimized several of its popular apps for use on the headset. Applications such as Google Maps and YouTube are specially adapted to use the entire headset screen and offer immersive experiences. In addition, users will be available to access to the entire Google Play app catalog, which ensures a wide range of applications from the start.

The headset is controlled by a combination of eye, hand and finger gestures, which should enable intuitive interaction with the virtual environment. Reports indicate that dedicated motion controllers could also be supported, although this function may not have been available at the time of the first hands-on demos. In addition, keyboard and mouse control are also supported, which could be particularly important for productivity-oriented applications.

Market positioning and strategic importance

With Project Moohan, Samsung enters the increasingly competitive market for mixed reality devices, which Apple is currently dominating with the high-priced vision Pro and Meta with the cheaper quest 3 series. The partnership between Samsung as a hardware manufacturer and Google as a software provider is a formidable challenge for the established actors and could significantly change the dynamics in this segment.

The strategic importance of this step can hardly be overestimated. After the relative withdrawal of Samsung from the VR market after the Gear VR, Project Moohan marks a determined return to the field of immersive technologies. At the same time, Google signals its claim with Android XR to take on a leading role in the operating system ecosystem for spatial computing devices, similar to how Android has managed in the smartphone area.

Samsung has also indicated plans for lighter AR glasses, which could possibly also be released this year. This indicates a more comprehensive strategy to cover various segments of the market for expanded reality-from full-fledged mixed reality headsets to lighter, possibly everyday, portable AR glasses, similar to the products of manufacturers such as META or XReal.

Open questions and expectations of the MWC presentation

Despite the already known information, some crucial questions remain unanswered, which can probably be answered on the 2025 MWC. The final brand name of the product (instead of the development name “Project Moohan”), the price and the exact date of availability are particularly interesting for potential buyers. The pricing will be a crucial factor to determine the market position compared to the expensive Apple Vision Pro ($ 3,500) and the cheaper META Quest 3.

Technically interested visitors and analysts will also be looking forward to the final specifications, in particular on details on the resolution, field of vision, battery life and integration with existing Samsung devices. The hands-on demos will show how good the PASSHROUGH quality is compared to the competition and how smoothly the operation using gestures works.

Another important aspect will be the demonstration of exclusive applications that exploit the full potential of the hardware and AI integration. Specially developed show case apps could illustrate what Samsung and Google see in the added value of their system compared to the established platforms.

Extended reality newly thought: Samsung's vision with Project Moohan

With Project Moohan, Samsung is about to take a significant step into the future of expanded reality. The company positions the combination of powerful hardware, Android XR as an operating system and advanced AI integration as a serious competitor in the growing XR market. The official presentation on the MWC 2025 will show whether Samsung and Google have the potential to change the established dynamics in this segment.

Cooperation between these two tech giants could create similar synergy effects as once when establishing Android as a dominant mobile operating system. For consumers, the entry of Samsung into this market means potentially more selection, competition and innovation, which could ultimately lead to better products at more competitive prices.

The coming days in Barcelona will offer crucial insights into the future vision of Samsung and Google for the expanded reality. Regardless of the still open details, it is clear that Project Moohan is more than just another gadget-it represents the beginning of a new era of collaboration between two of the world's largest technology companies and could pave the way for the next generation of immersive computing experiences.
