Transformation in streaming: Napster becomes a virtual 3D platform

Virtual Encounters with Napster 2.0: Entering the Metaverse as the Future of the Music Industry

The legendary music service Napster has changed hands once again: US technology company Infinite Reality has acquired the streaming platform for $207 million. The new owner plans a radical transformation of the service – away from traditional music streaming and towards an immersive metaverse platform where artists and fans can come together in virtual 3D spaces. This strategic acquisition could represent a significant turning point for the digital music industry and demonstrates how technology companies are attempting to extend the metaverse concept to various entertainment sectors.

The eventful history of Napster

Napster has a turbulent corporate history closely linked to the digitization of the music industry. Founded in 1999 by Shawn Fanning, John Fanning, and Sean Parker as a peer-to-peer file-sharing platform, the service enabled users to share MP3 files directly with each other for the first time. The platform quickly reached millions of users and became synonymous with illegal music streaming. This popularity, however, led to massive legal problems – several music industry players, including the band Metallica, sued Napster for copyright infringement.

Under legal pressure from the music industry, the service was temporarily shut down in 2001 and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2002. In the following years, the brand name changed hands several times, including Roxio, Best Buy, and Rhapsody. The music streaming service Rhapsody, which acquired Napster in 2011, even rebranded itself as Napster in 2016. Most recently, Napster belonged to the Web3 companies Hivemind and Algorand before being sold to Infinite Reality.

Despite its controversial beginnings, Napster has established itself as a legitimate music service, boasting a library of over 110 million licensed tracks and available in 34 countries. Over the past two decades, Napster has paid out over one billion euros to artists and songwriters.

The acquisition by Infinite Reality

On March 25, 2025, Infinite Reality and Napster announced in a joint statement that the technology company had acquired the music service for $207 million. This acquisition represents a significant milestone for both companies and marks another turning point in Napster's history.

Infinite Reality describes itself as “an innovation company driving the next generation of digital media and e-commerce through extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), and other immersive technologies.” The company already boasts a considerable network and entertainment assets, including the Drone Racing League (DRL) and top esports organizations competing in titles such as Call of Duty and League of Legends.

A key aspect of the acquisition is the continuity of leadership at Napster: Jon Vlassopulos, who was appointed CEO in 2022, will retain his position after the acquisition and will also assume a broader role for Infinite Reality globally. Vlassopulos brings valuable experience, having previously served as Vice President and Global Head of Music at Roblox, where he developed immersive experiences for leading artists and brands, reaching over 100 million fans and generating tens of millions of dollars in new revenue for the music industry.

Vision: Napster as a music metaverse

Infinite Reality's plans for Napster go far beyond traditional music streaming. The new owner intends to transform the service into an interactive social platform that utilizes modern technologies such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, and other immersive technologies – essentially a “metaverse of music.”.

At the heart of this vision is the creation of virtual 3D spaces within Napster where fans can come together and share experiences. These spaces are intended to offer various functions:

  1. Virtual concerts and listening parties where fans can experience music together
  2. Direct interaction options between artists and fans, such as chat functions
  3. Sale of physical and digital merchandise – similar to skins for digital characters in video games
  4. Personalized environments that can be designed by artists – for example, a reggae artist could set up a virtual beach meeting point for his fans

John Acunto, CEO of Infinite Reality, emphasized the revolutionary nature of the project: “I believe there is no better name than Napster to revolutionize something.” He sees the acquisition as a strategic move that aligns with Infinite Reality’s vision of “leading the transformation of the internet industry from a flat, clickable 2D web to a conversational 3D web.”.

This vision is reminiscent of concepts already found in the gaming world, particularly Fortnite, which is often described as the first gaming metaverse. Infinite Reality also plans to integrate gamification elements into Napster to increase fan engagement and encourage users to spend money.

Perspectives and impact on the music industry

Napster's transformation into a metaverse platform could have far-reaching implications for the music industry. While traditional streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music primarily enable passive music listening, Napster's new vision aims for active interaction and community building.

Jon Vlassopulos, CEO of Napster, describes this development as the logical next step in the evolution of the internet: “The internet has evolved from desktop to mobile, from mobile to social media, and now we are entering the immersive era. But music streaming has remained largely the same. It’s time to rethink what’s possible.”.

The combination of music and metaverse technologies holds great potential for new business models and user experiences. Artists could tap into new revenue streams beyond traditional streaming, while fans could build deeper and more personal connections with their favorite artists.

At the same time, the timing of this significant investment in the metaverse concept represents an interesting development. As noted in a more critical report, many technology companies appear to have already shifted their focus from metaverse projects to AI-based initiatives. It remains to be seen whether Napster's realignment will be successful against this trend.

Renaissance of a music legend in the digital age

With its acquisition by Infinite Reality, Napster is facing another profound transformation. From its rebellious beginnings as an illegal file-sharing service, through its evolution into a legitimate streaming service, to its planned future as an immersive metaverse platform – Napster remains a fascinating case of brand resilience and adaptability in the digital age.

The success of this ambitious vision will depend on whether Infinite Reality manages to attract a critical mass of artists and fans to its immersive music platform. The integration of gamification elements, virtual spaces, and new monetization opportunities could indeed make an innovative contribution to the further development of the digital music landscape.

Although the concept of the metaverse has lost some momentum in recent years, its connection to music—a universal cultural medium—could potentially provide new impetus. In any case, Infinite Reality's acquisition of Napster underscores the continued interest in developing immersive digital experiences and could represent an important test case for the future of the metaverse in the entertainment sector.
