The metaverse is on everyone's lips, but most Germans still don't really know what it means. 58 percent of survey participants stated that they couldn't imagine what the tech buzzword actually entails. As our graphic shows, people with a concrete understanding of the metaverse are in the minority in Germany.
Only 19 percent of respondents said they could make sense of the term, while another 19 percent had at least heard of it. However, the tech industry is already jumping on the metaverse bandwagon: According to a survey by Sensor Tower, for example, around 100 apps included the term in their title or description in the respective app stores between October 2021 and January 2022. As of February, a total of 107 gaming apps, 101 finance apps, and 70 social media apps contained the term.
The term gained wider recognition in 1992 through the science fiction novel *Snow Crash* by American author Neal Stephenson, in which the metaverse refers to a virtual reality-based successor to the internet. On October 28, 2021, almost 30 years later, Mark Zuckerberg announced the immediate renaming of Facebook to *Meta*, thus bringing the discussion surrounding the term and related concepts like web3 into sharp focus.
