📉 Challenges in mechanical and plant engineering: A bleak picture for 2023

🏭 The mechanical and plant engineering sector is known to be the backbone of German industry. However, the latest figures from 2023 paint a rather bleak picture. Companies in this sector experienced a significant decline in orders in September. This applies not only to that single month, but also to the entire third quarter and the balance sheet for the first nine months of the year.

🌍 The mechanical and plant engineering sector has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years, shaped by geopolitical tensions, global trade wars, and uncertainties in world markets. The global pandemic further exacerbated these challenges, disrupting supply chains and dampening demand. The current figures reflect this uncertainty and its resulting economic impact.

📉 Despite several large orders in September, order intake was 13 percent lower than the previous year. This shows that even large contracts are not enough to compensate for the general downward trend in this sector. Interestingly, it wasn't just domestic orders that fell by 15 percent, but foreign demand also recorded a decline of 13 percent.

🌐 Particularly noteworthy is the difference in orders between non-eurozone countries and eurozone partner countries. While orders from non-eurozone countries declined by only 7 percent thanks to a few large contracts, eurozone partner countries experienced a drastic drop of 27 percent. This could be due to a number of factors, including economic uncertainties in the eurozone, potential trade tensions, or other geopolitical events.

👨‍🔬 Dr. Ralph Wiechers, Chief Economist of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), emphasized the ongoing challenges facing the mechanical and plant engineering sector. He pointed out that despite the obvious need for investment in the industry, a lack of positive impetus is noticeable. The continuous negative headlines and global uncertainties are undoubtedly impacting customers' willingness to invest, not only in Germany but worldwide.

"The consequences of high inflation and uncertainty caused by wars and other geopolitical upheavals are evident, to a greater or lesser degree, in all markets."
Dr. Ralph Wiechers, VDMA Chief Economist

It remains to be seen how the mechanical and plant engineering sector will develop in the coming months. There is hope that global markets will stabilize and demand will pick up again. However, companies in the industry will continue to face challenges, whether due to technological changes, foreign competition, or other macroeconomic factors.

🚀 To succeed in these challenging times, companies in the mechanical and plant engineering sector may need to rethink their strategies, foster innovation, and adapt to constantly changing market conditions. Only through adaptability, innovation, and the ability to see opportunities amidst challenges can they thrive in such a volatile environment.

The German mechanical and plant engineering sector is facing significant challenges. The latest figures serve as a wake-up call for the industry to adapt and seek new ways to succeed in a constantly changing global market environment. It is hoped that both companies and policymakers will take the necessary steps to get the sector back on track and solidify its position as a leading player in the global industry.

📊 Economic challenges in 2023

In the first three quarters of 2023, companies faced a significant challenge: order intake declined by a real 14 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. This downward trend was reflected in both domestic orders, which fell by 12 percent, and foreign orders, which declined by 16 percent. Eurozone countries were particularly affected, experiencing an above-average decline of 18 percent, while non-eurozone countries fared somewhat better at 14 percent. According to Dr. Wiechers, the consequences of high inflation and the uncertainty caused by armed conflicts and other geopolitical unrest are manifesting themselves in almost all markets.

Decline in order intake in the third quarter of 2023

Looking at the period from July to September 2023, a similar picture emerges: a real decline in orders of 15 percent compared to the previous year. Domestic orders fell by 12 percent, while foreign orders were even 16 percent lower. The particularly sharp decline of 23 percent in orders from Eurozone countries is striking, in contrast to the 13 percent decrease in orders from non-Eurozone countries.

🌍 Reasons for the economic slowdown

The economic slowdown during this period can be attributed to a multitude of factors. Inflation reached record highs in many countries, levels last seen in the 1970s. Energy and raw material costs rose relentlessly, burdening not only consumers but also businesses facing increased production costs. The war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions against Russia had far-reaching consequences for the global supply chain, leading to shortages and increased costs. Furthermore, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the overall unease.

📈 Impact of interest rate increases on the economy

Another factor influencing the economic situation was the global rise in interest rates by central banks in response to inflation. While this measure aims to cool the economy and curb inflation, it also dampened investment and consumption. Businesses already struggling with rising costs and uncertain prospects now faced more expensive loans and a more cautious customer base.

🏭 Impact on the industrial sector

The industrial sector, particularly mechanical and plant engineering, is feeling these developments especially acutely. As the backbone of many economies, it is directly dependent on investment activity in other sectors. The decline in orders could therefore be interpreted as an early indicator of a general economic slowdown. The manufacturing industry is traditionally strongly export-oriented, especially in countries like Germany. The declining figures from abroad suggest that the global economy is also facing challenges.

🔄 Adapting corporate strategies

To respond to the changing conditions, companies are forced to adapt their strategies. Cost reductions, efficiency improvements, and the diversification of sales markets are paramount. Some companies are focusing on innovation and the development of new products to respond to changing consumer needs and market conditions. Digitalization and automation are seen as key to increasing competitiveness. Furthermore, the crisis could also offer opportunities, such as accelerating the structural transformation towards more sustainable and resilient economic models.

🌐 Global uncertainty persists

However, all these efforts are embedded in an environment of global uncertainty. The economic outlook for the last quarter of 2023 and beyond therefore remains difficult to predict.
