Industrial Metaverse or maybe your own 3D platform? 🏭🌐✨🖥️🕶️
3D platforms will play a crucial role in our digital future. But what is this “Industrial Metaverse” that is often mentioned in the context of 3D technologies? Quite simply: If we apply the metaverse to the industrial sector, then we are often accompanied by the concept of Industry 4.0, with Smart Industry, Smart Factory, and all the other smart concepts that exist.
The metaverse, which was mainly defined and shaped by Meta (Facebook), pursues a completely different approach: In fact, this metaverse primarily aims at VR/AR entertainment and focuses on our own personal data, interests and habits.

From this perspective, it's no surprise that the metaverse is now seen as the next generation of the internet. As is typical in such processes, countless opportunists and opportunists are never far away, outdoing each other in this hype with meaningless opportunities and announcements or vague promises that are dangerous to one's wallet.
The metaverse is intended to be a place where the physical and digital worlds converge. Further development of XR technology should also enable interaction between digital 3D images (see digital twins) and digital 3D avatars.
Until recently, many metaverses were not 3D worlds, but poorly implemented 2D projections simulating the apparent 3D world.
The metaverse is intended to provide a space for infinitely interconnected virtual communities using VR headsets, AR glasses, smartphone apps, or other devices. Overall, there should be a purpose and added value that explains why the metaverse in question exists. All currently known metaverses utilize childlike curiosity and the human instinct to play to draw people into virtual worlds, whether through VR films, VR/AR games, or pure VR/AR entertainment (virtual and augmented reality).
Fraunhofer is also working on (Industrial) Metaverse
Industrial Metaverse is therefore no longer a classic buzzword when reputable companies or institutions deal with this topic.
“As is typical with trending topics, there is often a lack of uniform definitions and sometimes also a lack of substance. So what exactly is this metaverse and for whom is it relevant and why?”
Fraunhofer expresses itself very cautiously on this topic in its article “ Fact or Fiction? Technologies and Use Cases for the (Industrial) Metaverse ”
➡️ “It remains to be seen whether the metaverse can fulfill the vision of a virtual parallel world that flanks reality.”
🗒️ Promising new metaverse business models beyond meta (Facebook)
The term Metaverse is often still associated with the vision of Meta (formerly Facebook), but in reality, a variety of business models have developed in different sectors that differ from Meta's vision and offer specific added value for different industries.
1. B2C Metaverse Business Models
🛍️ E-Commerce/V-Commerce in the Metaverse
Even though this area is still in its infancy, virtual shopping experiences in 3D environments offer a completely new dimension to shopping. Instead of just viewing products online, customers could potentially shop in virtual stores and try out products in a 3D space in the future.
🎮 Digital Entertainment
This is not limited to games, but also extends to virtual concerts, theatre performances and other forms of digital art and entertainment.
🤝 Social Interaction
Platforms that allow users to interact with each other in a virtual environment offer immense opportunities for social connections, networking and community building.
🌐 More B2C Metaverse Business Models
2. Industrial and Business Metaverse Business Models
🏭 Virtual product development and prototyping
Companies could use the metaverse to work on product development in a shared virtual environment, making the process more efficient and collaborative.
💼 Virtual business meetings
Current video conferencing tools could be replaced by more immersive metaverse conferences, where participants interact in a shared virtual environment.
🏢 Virtual Offices
Employees could work in a virtual office, which could revolutionize the concept of remote work.
Alignment of business models
The main difference between these business models and Meta's vision lies in their focus and target audiences. While Meta's Metaverse could be an all-encompassing digital universe, these models focus on specific industries and offer solutions for specific problems or needs.

For companies, having their own 3D platform is an alternative solution and also financially feasible!
The use of VR in business is often reflected in training exercises. For example, consider a scenario where a new employee is being trained on large technical machines and equipment. Shutting down these services for training purposes would be an expensive and disruptive process for the company. VR comes into play to alleviate this problem.
AR can also help organizations improve their efficiency, particularly through remote support capabilities ("seeing what I see") and the ability to overlay data onto the real world. On-site assembly, security, and industrial maintenance are all use cases for AR that will continue to grow significantly in the coming years.
It's logical that the use of augmented reality serves the larger consumer market. However, this market only works with 3D images (digital twins) of products and machines.
These costs and expenses aren't even mentioned in the Metaverse's promotional materials. This means that the Metaverse operator provides the platform and everything that goes with it to third parties at a low cost. The actual work of "operating" and "entertaining" users is left to others.
For companies and manufacturers, the following risks and problems arise: For CAD/3D models of products and machines, there are no cases in which data security is guaranteed.
Update: 🗒️ For companies, a dedicated 3D platform is the right solution and also financially feasible!
Advancing technology has the potential to steer businesses in a completely new direction. One such groundbreaking technology is the 3D platform. 🗒️ What is the difference between a 3D platform and the metaverse, and where do they have similarities?
Before we delve into the details, it is important to clarify what both a 3D platform and the metaverse are.
1. Definitions
3D platform
A digital environment where users can create, view, and interact with three-dimensional content. It usually serves specific purposes such as gaming, design, or education. 🎮
Metaverse
The term “metaverse” refers to a collective, shared virtual space created by the convergence of physical and virtual reality and interactive digital space. It is a place where users can live, work, and play. 🌐
