The statistics show the number of retail companies (excluding motor vehicle trading) in Germany by employee size class from 2010 to 2019. In 2019, there were an estimated 136,817 retail companies with one to two employees in Germany. Employees include working owners and helping family members. The statistics are based on a sample of around 8.5 percent of German trading companies.

Many of them are established companies. They didn't start out in a large warehouse or something similar, but mostly in ordinary buildings or properties whose size corresponds to the usual building standard.
