Logistics consists of the sub-areas of procurement logistics, production logistics, distribution logistics, and disposal logistics. Each of these areas is interconnected, creating a long chain.
Logistics essentially consists of two areas. Intralogistics is a very sensitive and relatively small sector. External logistics, encompassing transport, traffic, warehousing, and transshipment companies, is, on the other hand, one of the major sectors of the German economy.
Related to this:
Logistics is both an interdisciplinary science and an economic sector or operational function in organizations that deals with the planning, control, optimization and execution of flows of goods, information and people.
These flows include transportation, storage, handling, order picking, sorting, packaging, and distribution. For individual items, this is referred to as material flow. Sometimes, the entirety of these planning or execution processes is also called logistics. Besides this so-called process- or flow-oriented view of logistics, there are other perspectives that consider it an instrument of business management, as well as the view that all phases of the product life cycle are considered by logistics.
The logistics sector largely consists of freight forwarders, warehouses, and transport companies, and has become increasingly important since the end of the 20th century due to the distribution of production across numerous locations (globalization). In Germany, it is now the third largest sector in terms of the number of employees, despite a comparatively low specific value added.
Not e-commerce, not warehousing & distribution, IoT and other topics are currently at the forefront of logistics. Our AI found: "Outsourcing to specialized logistics service providers is one of the smart and strategic management decisions for companies that want to achieve greater efficiency in their internal logistics processes."

Specialized logistics services for greater efficiency
Automation is only part of the solution. Global markets are also constantly changing. A fixed strategy and long-term logistics planning are not possible without modular and flexible agitation models.
Will it become warehouse logistics without people?
The megatrends of digitalization, automation, and networking are shaping the processes of our daily lives. At the same time, they are a key factor in the economic strength of leading industrialized nations, which are constantly driving technological advancements through continuous innovation. Increasingly precise hardware and software that is becoming more powerful year after year enable system solutions that are taking over the work of human specialists in more and more areas. Logistics is also affected by this, and the question arises whether we are on the cusp of an era of warehouses without people.
For many people, robots have become an indispensable part of everyday life. The use of industrial robots in manufacturing has long been standard practice. Logistics, however, has lagged behind in this area. This is primarily because robots are more or less blind and deaf. They don't lack strength, but rather the senses of humans. And to function smoothly in warehouses, future generations of robots will need to master precisely these senses.

The pickup logistics of tomorrow?
Why pick up the furniture from the warehouse shelves when you can use a pick-up station? (Source: Pixabay)
Who hasn't experienced this? You're driving, hunger is setting in, and on a whim, you pull into one of the big fast-food chains, order a burger meal at the drive-thru, and a few meters later, your overflowing bag is handed to you through the open window. How convenient would it be to be able to do the same for bulkier items like furniture or hardware?
After the first drive-ins appeared in Germany in the 1950s in the form of drive-in cinemas, it wasn't until well into the 1980s that McDonald's opened its first drive-in in Berlin. Since then, drive-ins have enjoyed an impressive rise in popularity in Germany, and their success has meant that these convenient windows are no longer used exclusively by fast-food restaurants.
Supermarket chains like Rewe, Metro, and Real were a key focus, testing in-store pickup of items purchased online. This proactive approach by retailers is well-founded, as online giant Amazon has already established a strong presence in the US with its Fresh grocery program and associated pickup stations. Observers therefore see the grocery sector as one of the most important areas of application for Click & Collect and other pickup solutions, where shoppers load their goods into their cars in a drive-through manner.

Future concepts for supply logistics
The distribution of perishable goods in rural areas places the highest demands on food suppliers. Innovative logistics concepts are needed to ensure a high standard of service.
Public services refer to the provision of goods and services to the population for daily needs. Ensuring the necessary infrastructure is the responsibility of either the public sector or private companies. In the USA, Great Britain, and especially in Asia, comprehensive fresh food logistics is already common practice. Supermarkets operate their own online shops, guaranteeing timely delivery of groceries. In Germany, a functioning supply structure still depends significantly on the quality of housing and the location. Local retail outlets and related service providers are socially important meeting places, and workplaces, as retail outlets, have high social significance. However, the number of shops in rural areas has been declining for years. A seamless infrastructure is essential, particularly for older people due to limited mobility.

Green logistics – individual measures are not effective
More and more logistics professionals are thinking "green." But environmentally friendly and resource-conserving intralogistics requires highly efficient and well-designed material handling systems. This refers not only to the energy consumption of equipment, but also to the efficiency of individual components within a logistics center.
Since 2010, legislation has mandated that logistics buildings must operate with low CO2 emissions. This means that a significant portion of their energy consumption must be largely sourced from renewable sources. The German government set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. Germany aims to be virtually greenhouse gas neutral by 2050. Not only policymakers, but also rising energy costs and customer demands are driving pressure for improved energy efficiency. A PwC study on sustainability in the transport and logistics sector concluded that customer demands are the strongest driving force behind sustainability regulations. As a result, more and more companies are committing to environmentally friendly supply chains – and not just for reputational reasons. Markus Becker, Business Development Manager at the Japanese material handling expert DAIFUKU, explains: “We have been pursuing the Environmental Vision 2020 since 2011, with which we as a company stand for a sustainable environment. Every business activity of ours is carried out with an environmentally conscious approach. This naturally includes, in particular, the development and provision of material flow systems with low environmental impact.”
