In 2009, there were just under 1,500 electric cars in Germany. A good decade later, in 2021, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, there were already around 309,000 electric vehicles. Not Tesla, but the Renault Zoe was the most frequently registered electric car in Germany in 2020, with almost 30,000 new registrations (second place: Tesla Model 3 – 17,438). Worldwide, however, Tesla led the ranking of electric car sales with its Model 3 at the end of 2020, with approximately 813,000 vehicles sold, ahead of VW, SAIC, and BMW. The Nissan Leaf followed in second place globally with almost 500,000 electric cars sold. The Tesla Model S held third place with just over 300,000 new registrations.

In 2020, a new record was set with almost 11 million electric cars registered worldwide. Eight years earlier, the number was only 250,380. That's a fifty-fold increase!

Alongside renewable energies, electromobility is a key component of the energy transition, particularly in Europe. However, China is miles ahead of the Europeans, with over 5 million electric vehicles on the road in 2020. That's almost three times as many as the second-placed USA in a global comparison. In spring 2019, China implemented an electric vehicle quota, banning the production of fuel-guzzling models. Manufacturers are therefore required to ensure a certain percentage of their vehicles are powered by alternative drive systems. Chinese automakers dominate the electric vehicle market in China, while foreign manufacturers lag far behind. Many of these Chinese automakers are also still relatively unknown in the Western world.

To further promote sales of electric vehicles, the German Federal Government introduced a purchase premium for electric cars in April 2016, which came into effect in May 2016. Most applications for the environmental bonus have so far been for electric vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen. Renault and BMW followed in second and third place, respectively. Vehicles costing up to €65,000 are eligible for the subsidy. The subsidy applies to the acquisition (purchase or lease) of a battery electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid, or fuel cell vehicle that is being registered for the first time and whose net list price of the base model does not exceed €65,000.

📣 For electromobility, further components are essential. These range from the charging station or charging points and solar modules to the necessary mounting substructures – solar carports for open parking spaces.
