Choosing a career in artificial intelligence isn't just a career choice, but a strategic positioning in one of the most transformative technologies of our time. But what exactly does it mean to specialize in AI, and what opportunities and risks does this decision entail?

Today, AI specialization encompasses a broad spectrum of areas: from the development and programming of machine learning algorithms to the application of generative AI tools and the strategic implementation of AI systems in companies. The spectrum ranges from highly technical positions such as machine learning engineer or data scientist to consulting and managerial roles such as AI manager or AI product manager.

The job market for AI professionals is ambivalent: While the World Economic Forum predicts that demand for AI specialists will quadruple by 2025, recent studies from Germany show a rather stagnant picture. Although the number of online job advertisements related to AI doubled from 97,000 to 180,000 between 2019 and 2022, this represents only 1.5 percent of all advertised positions. Since 2022, this share has stagnated, and the absolute number of AI positions has declined slightly over the past two years.

Data scientists remain highly relevant, especially in organizations focused on data-driven product decisions. AI developers work directly on innovative applications, developing algorithms for natural language processing, image processing, and robotic process automation. Newer roles such as AI product managers are gaining importance as companies increasingly develop and market AI products.

A particularly interesting area is NLP engineers, who specialize in natural language processing and work on applications such as chatbots, voice assistants, and translation systems. Computer vision specialists are in high demand, especially in the development of autonomous vehicles and facial recognition. Prompt engineers, who design precise instructions for generative AI models, currently experience a mixed status: While they were hyped in the early days of generative AI, recent analyses show that this profession has barely established itself as a standalone job category.

Salaries in the AI ​​industry are attractive. AI developers in Germany earn an average of between €49,300 and €68,100 per year, with the median salary at around €56,300. According to various studies, AI professionals can expect annual salaries between €52,000 and €120,000, with about a quarter of AI/ML engineers even earning six-figure annual salaries.

What risks and challenges does an AI career entail?

Specializing in AI is not without risks. Technology is developing so rapidly that acquired knowledge can quickly become outdated. What is considered an innovative solution today may already be obsolete tomorrow due to new developments. This speed of change requires continuous learning and constant adaptation of one's skills.

Paradoxically, AI could also pose a long-term threat to jobs currently considered AI-safe. Experts warn of a potential wave of automation that could leave 99 percent of workers unemployed by 2030. Even highly skilled jobs like programming and data analysis can already be partially automated using AI tools.

Another risk lies in market concentration. The German AI labor market is highly concentrated in certain regions, particularly in southwest Germany, where cluster regions have formed around large, internationally active companies. This can lead to regional dependencies and limited job opportunities outside these centers.

The mental and physical demands of an AI career should not be underestimated either. Constant monitoring by AI systems can lead to high performance pressure, anxiety, and burnout. Continuous adaptation to new technologies requires a high degree of mental flexibility and can lead to overwhelm.

How are salaries and job market opportunities really developing?

Internationally, the picture is even more dynamic. The Wall Street Journal reports starting salaries exceeding $200,000 at leading AI companies. However, these extreme salaries are primarily found in the US and at a few top companies.

Job market opportunities vary greatly by industry. Demand is particularly strong in the healthcare sector for personalized medicine and AI-assisted diagnostics, in finance for algorithmic trading and fraud detection, in retail for inventory optimization and customer behavior, and in logistics for route optimization and supply chain management.

But reality also reveals limitations: Despite the predicted high demand, only a few explicitly advertised AI positions are actually being created in Germany. This suggests that many companies expect AI skills as an additional qualification in existing roles rather than creating new, specialized positions.

Which qualifications and further training are crucial?

Starting a career in AI requires a solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, and programming. Python is considered the most important programming language, followed by C++, R, and Java. Knowledge of AI frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow is essential. Machine Learning Operations (MLOps), tools and methods for automating and scaling ML workflows, are becoming increasingly important.

In addition, knowledge of natural language processing (NLP) and neural networks is essential. Data engineering, the development of systems for collecting, managing, and transforming raw data, often forms the foundation for advanced AI applications.

The range of continuing education courses in the field of AI is now diverse and comprehensive. Haufe Academy offers various AI training courses, from developing solid data skills to the strategic integration of AI in companies. The German Association of the Digital Economy (BVDW) offers a certificate course for AI Officers, which confirms expertise in accordance with Article 4 of the AI ​​Regulation.

It is significant that parts of the European AI Regulation (AI Act) have been in force since February 2025. Article 4 sets certain requirements for the AI ​​skills of employees in companies that work with AI systems. This creates a de facto continuing education requirement and significantly increases the demand for qualified AI courses.

Renowned institutions such as RWTH Aachen University offer a five-day certificate course in AI Business Management for €3,780. How will AI change the world of work by 2030?

Forecasts for the development of the world of work through 2030 are both dramatic and contradictory. The World Economic Forum estimates that 75 million jobs worldwide will be lost due to AI, but at the same time, 133 million new jobs could be created. In Germany alone, 300,000 jobs could be lost due to AI and robotics, particularly in industrial production.

Jobs with repetitive and rule-based tasks are particularly affected. Cashiers, drivers, accountants, bank tellers, factory workers, and warehouse workers are among the most vulnerable. McKinsey's studies show that in industry and manufacturing, up to 50 percent of jobs are at risk from AI, while office and administrative jobs have an expected replacement rate of up to 40 percent.
