🏗️ Earthquake safety in high-bay warehouses
📄🔍 Our specialist article from July 7th, 2016 : Foundation insulation, shelf fastenings, seismic loading units
🌊 Floods, storms, forest fires, earthquakes – natural disasters and economic damage
Floods, storms, forest fires, earthquakes – natural disasters often cause major economic damage. Especially when industrial companies use expensive capital goods. While storm damage in Germany is primarily caused by floods, Japanese companies are repeatedly affected by tremors, even after the major earthquake in 2011. As a Japanese group, Daifuku has many years of expertise in the area of earthquake safety for high-bay warehouses and has developed a number of measures that logisticians can use to protect their systems in the event of vibrations. These include foundation insulation, shelf fastenings and seismic loading units.
📉 Economic losses caused by the 2011 earthquake
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake measuring 9 on the moment magnitude (Mw) scale caused catastrophic damage on the Pacific coast of eastern Japan. Around 400,000 buildings collapsed in an area around 450 km long and 200 km wide, and numerous people were killed or seriously injured. In addition to the socio-social aspects of the natural disaster, Japanese industry suffered severe economic losses. Production halls and warehouses were destroyed or rendered inoperable by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. In the logistics sector, many companies experienced losses as stored goods became unusable due to the effects of the natural disaster. High-bay warehouses also showed significant structural damage and often had to be completely replaced. In order to better prepare commercial enterprises for new earthquakes, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) took measures to organize logistics in an earthquake-proof manner. If companies store goods on pallets, it is important to protect them from slipping in the event of an earthquake. In addition, the aim is to prevent a pallet from falling from a high rack and to prevent the rack from collapsing in the event of a severe earthquake. “As a material handling expert, Daifuku constantly researches and develops effective solutions for earthquake-proof storage in automated high-bay warehouses. Our research results are incorporated into customer advice,” reports Rainer Joost, Business Development Manager at Daifuku Europe.
🛠️ Measures for earthquake-proof storage
In well-known earthquake zones such as Japan, companies need long-term solutions to protect their products, bearings and machines from damage. The goal for material handling system providers is therefore to ensure that their solutions have as little external disruption as possible on buildings and products. Four measures have proven to be effective.
🏗️ Foundation isolation
A fundamental measure for earthquake-proof storage, which must be taken into account when planning and building a warehouse, is the integration of foundation insulation. A foundation block is embedded in the ground, which, with its inherently rigid mass, has an inertia that counteracts the forces that cause earthquakes. By extending the foundation insulation from short-term shocks to longer-term oscillations, serious damage to goods, warehouses and machines can be reduced. In addition, the insulation reduces the transmission of structure-borne noise, which extends the lifespan of buildings and devices. However, it is advisable to check the economic viability beforehand, as foundation insulation is cost-intensive.
🔗 Fastening for high-bay warehouses
Similar to foundation isolation, seismic fastenings of high-bay warehouses help to increase the inherent rigidity of the racks and thus slow down the vibrations caused by an earthquake. For this purpose, the shelves are reinforced with special plug-in connections, which effectively dampens the impact of force from outside. For companies that do not want to install a new high-bay warehouse, Daifuku offers rack insulation. In contrast to seismic insulation, the insulation material is attached to existing high racks. If the fastening is used in combination with foundation insulation, it is referred to as double insulation.
🤖 Storage and retrieval machines that restart independently
If the foundation is insulated and the shelves are secured, the stacker cranes and loading units of an automated warehouse must also be seismically reinforced. If an earthquake occurs, the flow of materials in the high-bay warehouse is interrupted because the transport equipment comes to a standstill. For companies, this can result in delivery bottlenecks and financial losses. The AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System) stacker crane from Daifuku can be equipped so that it restarts automatically after production is stopped due to an earthquake. During the quake, a low-friction ball bearing ensures that the vibrations are isolated. This enables flexible 360-degree horizontal movement. The shelf rails are attached at a special angle so that the building returns to its original position after the earthquake.
📦 Stretch film
The easiest way to keep goods on a pallet from slipping during earthquakes is to secure them with stretch wrap. The disadvantage: The film is a hindrance in the distribution process because it makes it difficult to access individual boxes. Stretch film is therefore suitable for goods that are stored for a longer period of time.
🏭 Nissin Pharmaceuticals relies on seismically enhanced AS/RS
An example of a seismically fortified warehouse is the pharmaceutical manufacturer Nissin Pharmaceuticals' factory in Yamagata. In 2013, the Japanese company had its third factory built to be earthquake-proof. The tablet manufacturer also relies on palletizing robots and the AS/RS seismic loading units from Daifuku. Combined with foundation isolation, the loading unit can reduce impacts from earthquakes of magnitude 6 on the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) scale by 75 percent. This ensures that customers are supplied even in the event of recurring earthquakes. “Longer production downtimes are avoided and the financial damage caused by an earthquake is minimized,” says Joost.
