📄🔍 Our technical article from July 7, 2016 : Foundation insulation, shelf fixings, seismic loading units
🌊 Floods, storms, forest fires, earthquakes – natural disasters and economic damage
Floods, storms, forest fires, earthquakes – natural disasters often cause significant economic damage, especially when industrial companies use expensive capital goods. While storm damage in Germany is primarily caused by flooding, Japanese companies continue to be affected by tremors, even after the major earthquake of 2011. As a Japanese corporation, Daifuku possesses many years of expertise in the field of earthquake safety for high-bay warehouses and has developed a range of measures to protect logistics companies' facilities from tremors. These include foundation insulation, rack fixings, and seismic load units.
📉 Economic losses due to the 2011 earthquake
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake measuring 9 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw) struck the Pacific coast of eastern Japan, causing catastrophic damage. Approximately 400,000 buildings collapsed across an area roughly 450 km long and 200 km wide, resulting in numerous deaths and serious injuries. Beyond the socio-economic impact of the natural disaster, Japanese industry suffered severe economic losses. Production facilities and warehouses were destroyed or rendered inoperable by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. Many logistics companies experienced losses as stored goods were rendered unusable by the effects of the natural disaster. High-bay warehouses also sustained significant structural damage and often required complete replacement. To better prepare businesses for future earthquakes, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) addressed measures for earthquake-resistant logistics operations. When companies store goods on pallets, it's crucial to prevent them from shifting during earthquakes. Furthermore, pallets falling from high-bay racking must be prevented, and racking collapses must be averted during severe tremors. "As a material handling expert, Daifuku constantly researches and develops effective solutions for earthquake-resistant storage in automated high-bay warehouses. Our research findings inform our customer consultations," reports Rainer Joost, Business Development Manager at Daifuku Europe.
🛠️ Measures for earthquake-resistant storage
In known earthquake zones like Japan, companies need long-term solutions to protect their products, warehouses, and machinery from damage. The goal for material handling system providers is therefore to minimize the impact of external disturbances on buildings and products through their solutions. Four measures have proven effective.
🏗️ Foundation insulation
A fundamental measure for earthquake-resistant storage, which must be considered during the planning and construction of a warehouse, is the integration of foundation isolation. This involves embedding a foundation block in the ground, whose inherent mass provides inertia that counteracts the excitation forces of earthquakes. By spreading short-term shocks into longer-lasting vibrations, the foundation isolation can reduce serious damage to goods, racking systems, and machinery. Furthermore, the isolation reduces the transmission of structure-borne noise, thus extending the lifespan of buildings and equipment. However, a cost-benefit analysis is recommended beforehand, as foundation isolation is expensive.
🔗 Mounting system for high-bay warehouses
Similar to foundation isolation, seismic anchoring of high-bay warehouses helps to increase the inherent rigidity of the racks and thus slow down vibrations caused by an earthquake. This is achieved by reinforcing the racks with special connectors, which effectively dampen the external shock waves. For companies that do not want to install a new high-bay warehouse, Daifuku offers rack insulation. Unlike seismic isolation, the insulation material is attached to existing high-bay racks. When the anchoring is used in combination with foundation isolation, it is referred to as double isolation.
🤖 Self-starting storage and retrieval machines
Once the foundation is insulated and the racking is secured, the next step is to seismicly reinforce the storage and retrieval machines and loading units of an automated warehouse. If an earthquake occurs, the material flow in the high-bay warehouse is interrupted because the transport equipment comes to a standstill. This can lead to supply bottlenecks and financial losses for companies. The AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System) storage and retrieval machine from Daifuku can be equipped to restart automatically after a production stoppage caused by an earthquake. During the earthquake, a low-friction ball bearing isolates the vibrations. This is achieved by allowing flexible 360-degree horizontal movement. The racking rails are installed at a specific angle so that the structure returns to its original position after the earthquake.
📦 Stretch film
The simplest way to prevent goods on a pallet from shifting during earthquakes is to secure them with stretch film. The disadvantage: the film is cumbersome during distribution, as it makes it difficult to access individual cartons. Stretch film is therefore best suited for goods that are stored for extended periods.
🏭 Nissin Pharmaceuticals relies on seismically enhanced AS/RS
One example of a seismically reinforced warehouse is the factory of pharmaceutical manufacturer Nissin Pharmaceuticals in Yamagata. In 2013, the Japanese company had its third factory built to withstand earthquakes. The tablet manufacturer also relies on palletizing robots and Daifuku's AS/RS seismic loading units. In combination with foundation insulation, the loading unit can reduce the impact of earthquakes of magnitude 6 on the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) scale by 75 percent. This ensures customer supply even during recurring earthquakes. "Extended production downtimes are avoided, and the financial damage caused by an earthquake is minimized," says Joost.
