Every three years, bauma

The last time a visitor record was set was when 620,000 people attended. This year, no one expected a similarly large number – in the end, 495,000 people came. The number of exhibitors also differed: instead of 3,800, only 3,100 participated. Chinese companies stayed away due to the COVID-19 restrictions there, and Russian companies because of the war in Ukraine. Actually, it was a great success. A good 20% fewer visitors than in 2019, but also less competition. Reading the exhibitors' statements, there is almost unanimous agreement: bauma was a success. It was the right mix of trade fair size, number of visitors, and reduced competition.

Bauma has exceeded the industry's expectations:

“Our appearance at the leading trade fair bauma is the most successful to date in the history of the WIRTGEN GROUP.”

“We were truly overwhelmed on opening day: Visitors flocked to our stand, and we had many very good conversations, especially about our key topics.”

“bauma was very successful for us. With one hundred exhibits, we focused on the three key innovation areas of efficiency, digitalization and product responsibility, and discussed these topics with our customers and partners from all over the world.”

“The number of visitors was good, and there were many curious people from all over the world.”

“We are delighted with the highly successful bauma 2022, which dispelled all uncertainties regarding people's behavior. The trade fair as a whole has made an impressive comeback, demonstrating that people are seeking personal interaction. bauma, in particular, has shown that large-scale events remain a key driver for the industry, and we are pleased to have been a part of it in 2022 as the Green Heart of bauma.”

“We are extremely pleased with how bauma went. The response from our customers and trade fair visitors has been tremendous. Even the bad weather on the first day couldn't deter anyone from coming.”

Future topics of automation and digitalization remain in focus

Bauma has not only presented itself as a business platform; it also lives up to its leading position in terms of its thematic focus. Franz-Josef Paus, Managing Director of Hermann Paus Maschinenfabrik GmbH and Chairman of the bauma Advisory Board, summarizes: “We are extremely pleased with how bauma has gone. The response from our customers and trade fair visitors has been tremendous. The trade fair is characterized by the themes of digitalization and automation, a trend that is irreversible.” Joachim Schmid, Managing Director of the VDMA Construction Machinery and Building Material Plants, confirms this: “The exhibitors are offering solutions for the current challenges surrounding CO2 neutrality, and automation and digitalization are also addressing the shortage of skilled workers. This is the future, as can be seen in the traditional companies and, for the first time at the trade fair, in almost 50 startups.”

Andreas Klauser, CEO of PALFINGER, sums it up perfectly: “As the world’s leading trade fair, bauma allows its exhibitors and visitors to experience the future right now.”

bauma 2022 Highlights – Large Machines – Image: Wolfilser|Shutterstock.com

Bauma is one of the trade fairs where the actual target group of purchasing companies and "fans of large construction machinery" mingle. In contrast to ACHEMA, which suffered a huge decline (more than 50%) at its last event and cannot offer "big machines and excavators for the inner child in every man," this effect still holds true at bauma.

The positive response would probably have been more subdued had there been no competition from exhibitors from China and Russia.

Nevertheless, bauma is certainly giving serious thought to the future. Looking back positively is one thing; looking ahead with the right vision is another. This year, bauma has already taken the next step into the digital world with Vuframe.

bauma 2022 demonstrates the industry's innovative capacity and exceeds expectations

Entrance to the exhibition grounds of Messe München, where BAUMA 2022, the world's leading trade fair for construction machinery and technology, took place – Munich, Bavaria, Germany – October 16, 2022 – Image: tina7si|Shutterstock.com

Around 200 exhibitors from 60 countries – More than 000 visitors from over 200 countries – Industry expectations far exceeded.

When the Munich Trade Fair Center transforms into the hub of the construction machinery industry for seven days, it's finally time for bauma again. A total of around 3,200 exhibitors from 60 countries (2019: 3,684 exhibitors from 63 countries) and more than 495,000 visitors from over 200 countries (2019: 627,603 visitors from more than 200 countries) came to Munich from October 24 to 30, 2022, for the world's leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles, and construction equipment. The proportion of international visitors was around 50 percent.

The top ten exhibiting countries were – in this order – Germany, Italy, Turkey, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, France, the USA, Austria, Spain, and China. The proportion of international exhibitors was almost 65 percent.

Stefan Rummel, Managing Director of Messe München, is delighted: “This bauma has once again thrilled and fascinated! After the world has fundamentally changed since the last bauma, we are extremely pleased that bauma 2022, with its numerous innovations from our customers, successful business deals and many visitors from all over the world, remains a powerhouse of the construction machinery industry.”

Expectations of the industry far exceeded

And that's because bauma presented itself with its usual strength, even in these uncertain times, as Domenic Ruccolo, CSO Wirtgen Group and Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing, and Product Support, Global Construction Equipment, John Deere, confirms: “The joint trade fair appearance of the WIRTGEN GROUP and John Deere was a complete success. The interest in our company and our sustainable product innovations was overwhelming. Our appearance at the leading trade fair bauma is the most successful to date in the history of the WIRTGEN GROUP.” Steffen Günther, member of the board of directors at Liebherr, also draws a positive conclusion: “bauma was very successful for us. We inspired a large audience. The discussions were excellent. We are already looking forward to the next edition of the trade fair.” Fred Cordes, Chairman of the Management Board at Zeppelin (CAT), adds: “bauma was long overdue: This is demonstrated by the overwhelming rush to our booth and the extraordinary interest in Cat construction equipment and Zeppelin services.”

In terms of business deals, bauma was once again THE platform for the industry. Alexander Greschner, Chief Sales Officer at the Wacker Neuson Group, said: “Visitors flocked to our booth, we had many excellent discussions, and from day one, we saw sales success at and above the level of 2019.” Alexander Schwörer, owner of PERI, confirmed: “The whole team was very curious to see how the trade fair would develop in these challenging times. But after the first day, it was clear: this bauma will be a complete success. Particularly noteworthy is the outstanding quality of the discussions we had during the week. And last but not least: we signed some very attractive contracts directly at the fair. In conclusion: bauma 2022 has more than exceeded our expectations.”

These are assessments that the CEO duo of Messe München, Stefan Rummel and Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, are pleased to hear: “In these challenging times, bauma has sent a strong signal to the trade fair industry: Industries need exactly these kinds of in-person events like bauma, where products can be experienced and personal discussions can be held.”

bauma press release dated October 30, 2022

Exhibitor statements bauma 2022

Wolf Christian Behrbohm, Managing Director, Layher

"Bauma, as the world's largest construction trade fair with many interesting industry contacts, is very important to us. Every three years, we meet our numerous customers from Germany and abroad here and can engage in intensive dialogue with them.".

After months of contact restrictions, we were all the more delighted to finally see customers and interested professionals again live and in person, and to provide them with comprehensive information about Layher's groundbreaking innovations in scaffolding systems, access technology, and construction technology – with overwhelming feedback. A successful trade fair.”

Fred Cordes, Chairman of the Management Board, Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH (CAT)

“The bauma trade fair was long overdue: This is demonstrated by the overwhelming crowds at our booth and the extraordinary interest in Cat construction equipment and Zeppelin services. Visitors not only appreciate the personal contacts, direct discussions, and professional exchange, but above all, they are looking for the latest solutions and modern technologies to efficiently master the future challenges surrounding digitalization and sustainability. Here, on the unique bauma trade fair platform, we were able to present them with suitable offers and individual solutions and show that Zeppelin and Cat are the first choice when it comes to construction equipment and the corresponding service.”

Stina Fagerman, Head of Marketing, Sales and Services, Mercedes-Benz Trucks

“It was important for us to be at bauma because we sell roughly one in five Mercedes-Benz trucks in Europe to the construction sector. This makes it our second most important sales market after long-haul transport. The electrification of the industry is now playing a particularly important role. By 2030, CO2-neutral commercial vehicles are expected to account for up to 60 percent of Daimler Truck sales in the EU30 markets. Therefore, we presented several all-electric trucks for construction applications at the trade fair in Munich over the past few days. My highlights were the concept prototype of the eActros LongHaul, now with an electric interface for semi-trailers such as tippers, and the battery-electric prototype of the Arocs construction truck as a concrete mixer, which we presented for the first time together with our partners Paul Group and Liebherr. It is characterized by its ground clearance and off-road capability. It was fantastic for me to see how enormous the interest in the trade fair and our vehicles was.”

Alexander Greschner, Sales Director, Wacker Neuson Group

“After more than two years of pandemic, we were especially looking forward to bauma – for us, it was a home game. We were truly overwhelmed on opening day: Visitors flocked to our stand, we had many excellent discussions, particularly about our key topics of zero emissions, digital solutions, and innovations, and from day one, we saw sales figures at or even higher than in 2019. My conclusion: bauma is and remains the leading trade fair for our industry and the platform to present our new products to customers and trade visitors!”

Steffen Günther, Member of the Board of Directors, Liebherr-International AG

"bauma was a great success for us. With one hundred exhibits, we focused on the three key innovation areas of efficiency, digitalization, and product responsibility, and discussed these topics with our customers and partners from all over the world. We captivated a large audience. The discussions were excellent. We are already looking forward to the next edition of the trade fair."

Thomas Harring, President Geosystems Division, Hexagon

“Hexagon is reimagining the construction industry with Smart Digital Realities, empowering it to improve exponentially. Comprehensive transformation depends on those who implement it: in a technology-driven world, it is people who make the difference. bauma is a unique opportunity to showcase Hexagon’s vision of an autonomous future where industry, people, and the planet thrive sustainably. We were able to present solutions from our Leica Geosystems and AGTEK brands that drive this vision forward and connect with the customers and partners who are joining us on this journey.”

Robert Hauser, CEO, Doka

“For one week, the entire construction industry has its eyes on one place: Munich. As the world's leading trade fair for the construction industry, bauma is an indispensable international platform for us. A place where we network with our partners and customers, perfectly in line with our motto, ‘Doka connects.’ For us, this will be the best bauma ever; that's also our internal motto. This year, we're presenting even more innovations than before. And we're meeting more decision-makers than ever before. We've significantly strengthened our market presence in the area of slab formwork and created a real eye-catcher with our 30-meter-high scaffolding tower: This year, Doka is even more clearly representing formwork AND scaffolding than ever before. Digitalization and sustainability are our key drivers for the coming years, and at this year's bauma, we already demonstrated how digitalized construction processes and (partially) automated equipment can mitigate the skilled labor shortage, increase safety on the construction site, and simultaneously reduce CO2 emissions. The feedback from our customers and guests was…” "Overwhelming. We are very satisfied."

Niklas Haver, Managing Partner, HAVER & BOECKER oHG

"bauma is the only trade fair where we meet all target groups of our three product areas – technological wire mesh, processing and packaging technology. It is the

The leading trade fair among industrial companies, and not just for the construction industry. The combination of scale, experience, and Bavarian hospitality makes bauma so unique. The visitor profile is diverse: We have discussions with project decision-makers and users as well as with guests who are on-site at the customer's machine, responsible for maintenance, service, and servicing. These are our key target groups; therefore, we are pleased with the high-quality mix of attendees. The dominant theme at bauma was clearly "How can I achieve more with less?" This focuses on current trends such as energy saving and CO2 reduction

Gernot Hein, Head of Communications / Press Spokesperson of the Industrial Technology Division, ZF Friedrichshafen AG

“For ZF Friedrichshafen AG, bauma, as the world's leading trade fair, is the most important event in the construction machinery sector – a place where visitors can experience tomorrow's innovations and global megatrends firsthand. This vibrant atmosphere of progress provides us with the ideal setting to present our product highlights. This year, all our customers and key business contacts were present, and the number and quality of technical discussions were exceptionally high. For us, there is no better platform than bauma to discuss future-oriented topics and trends.”

Martin Hemberger, Vice President Forming & Shoring International, Hünnebeck GmbH

“bauma 2022 was a great success for Hünnebeck and BrandSafway. We were particularly pleased to welcome numerous customers to our stand after the long pandemic and to make many interesting new contacts. Intensive discussions with industry professionals showed that our core themes of ‘More Productivity’ and ‘More Safety’ for formwork resonated strongly – especially in times of skilled labor shortages and rising costs. Furthermore, with hybrid events, we brought bauma from Munich to our customers in various countries for the first time. bauma has once again confirmed its reputation as the leading trade fair for the construction industry.”

Uli Hermanski, CMO & Executive VP, GM Positioning Solutions Business EMEA, Topcon Positioning Group

“bauma is a truly special experience. What makes it unique is that it brings together the entire construction workflow – the machines themselves and the technology and software that make them as efficient and precise as possible. The opportunity to gather so many industry professionals from around the world in one place is invaluable. In our 90th anniversary year, it was simply incredible to meet and celebrate with so many people in person – both our existing customers and new contacts. For the development of our industry, it is crucial that we can come together and discuss the challenges we face together, as well as the digital technologies that can make our work even more productive, precise, and profitable.”

Dr.-Ing. Eh Martin Herrenknecht, Chairman of the Board, Herrenknecht

“Every bauma is special, but this year's bauma was an opportunity for us to revitalize our customer and market relationships. This perfectly aligned with our motto, ‘Reconnect our joined ingenuity,’ and it was a resounding success. We enjoyed every day of the trade fair and the inspiring exchange about current and future projects.”.

What happens in Munich through face-to-face meetings is, in our view, unbeatable. We are grateful to our partners and customers for their time and presence. It's simply wonderful to see each other again and feel the spirit of our industry

Bernd Holz, Executive Vice President, Ammann Group

"The number of visitors was good, and many curious people from all over the world visited the Ammann stand. It was great to have personal conversations with so many visitors!"

Michael Ibarth, Director of Marketing / Corporate Communications, SENNEBOGEN Maschinenfabrik GmbH

“We are delighted with the highly successful outcome of bauma 2022, which dispelled all uncertainties regarding people's behavior. The trade fair as a whole made an impressive comeback, demonstrating that people are seeking personal interaction. bauma, in particular, showed that large-scale events remain a key driver for the industry, and we are pleased to have been a part of it in 2022 as the Green Heart of bauma.”

Dr. Rüdiger Kaub, Managing Director, BAUER Maschinen GmbH

"In short: This is where the industry meets. As the world's largest construction machinery trade fair, and conveniently located just a few kilometers from our company headquarters in Schrobenhausen, bauma is practically a home game for us. That's why we've been participating for over 40 years – the fair is and will remain a fixed date in our calendar. Overall, we found both the quality and quantity of visitors to be excellent once again. As in 2019, we were able to welcome numerous guests, interested parties, and of course, long-standing partners and friends to our newly designed and CO2-neutral stand. We had many high-quality discussions, and the feedback we received on our stand and our innovations was simply fantastic."

Andreas Klauser, CEO, PALFINGER AG

“As the world’s leading trade fair, bauma allows its exhibitors and visitors to experience the future firsthand. What makes it special is that we not only demonstrate how new PALFINGER solutions proactively shape the future, but also benefit from the numerous conversations and discussions with visitors, customers, and partners. For PALFINGER, it is precisely this personal exchange that provides impetus for new developments and drives innovation. bauma fosters this exchange with unparalleled intensity in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere.”

Max Luedtke, Head of Mining, ABB

“bauma 2022 is the perfect stage to take visitors on a journey into the reality of tomorrow. ABB’s mining experts, comprised of specialists in electrification, automation, digitalization, crushing and conveying, will present ABB’s latest solutions, products and methods that enable leading mining companies to achieve their zero-emission targets faster while ensuring safe, efficient and profitable operations.”

Tadashi Maeda, CEO, Komatsu Europe

"With the conclusion of bauma 2022, Komatsu would like to thank Messe München for this fantastic triennial event. This year's event was once again a great success for Komatsu, our dealers, customers, and suppliers. bauma 2022 offered a glimpse into Komatsu's future, showcasing groundbreaking technologies, new ways of working, and unique solutions that paved the way to a cleaner and safer working environment. And thanks to this unique experience, we all learned more about the people we work with.".

This know-how, which we have acquired and developed, will help us to create further value together.”

Fabio Marasi – President & CEO Walvoil Spa, Board Member, Interpump Group

“Bauma is undoubtedly the event that every company involved with construction and mining machinery and components prepares for issue after issue, in order to gauge market developments and the innovations presented. We are proud to have long pursued two of the most important industry themes proposed by the trade fair, which guide our daily R&D activities: sustainability and digitalization. This is a direction in which we will continue to steer our developments in the future.”

Franz-Josef Paus, Managing Director of Hermann Paus Maschinenfabrik GmbH and Chairman of the VDMA Construction Machinery and Building Material Plants

“We are extremely pleased with how bauma went. The response from our customers and trade fair visitors has been tremendous. Even the bad weather on the first day couldn't deter anyone from coming. Postponing bauma by six months to October was the right decision. Unfortunately, we simply can't fulfill all the orders. Even if we had the parts, we would still lack the skilled workers. Therefore, the trade fair is dominated by the themes of digitalization and automation; this trend is irreversible.”

Domenic Ruccolo, CSO Wirtgen Group and Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing, and Product Support, Global Construction Equipment, John Deere

"The joint trade fair appearance of the WIRTGEN GROUP with John Deere under the motto 'The Future in Roadbuilding: Smart. Safe. Sustainable.' was a complete success.".

The interest in our company and our sustainable product innovations was overwhelming. Our appearance at the leading trade fair bauma is the most successful in the history of the WIRTGEN GROUP and a successful market entry for John Deere wheel loaders in Europe

Joachim Schmid, Managing Director, VDMA Construction Machinery and Building Material Plants

“Our manufacturers and members are consistently signaling a positive mood. Visitors to the trade fair are coming from all over the world to prepare themselves for the upcoming transformation of the industry – there’s no sign of a crisis atmosphere. This sends a real signal to the business community and the public. After all, the exhibitors are offering solutions for the current challenges surrounding CO2 neutrality, and automation and digitalization are also addressing the skilled labor shortage. This is the future, as you can see from the traditional companies and, for the first time at the trade fair, from almost 50 startups. bauma has once again proven that it is the right event to showcase this.”

Alexander Schwörer, Owner, PERI SE

“bauma 2022 was a resounding success for PERI. The entire team was very curious to see how the trade fair would unfold in these challenging times. But after the first day, it was clear: this bauma would be a complete success. We wanted to impress our visitors with our innovations in formwork, scaffolding, civil engineering, digitalization, and 3D printing. We succeeded completely. Particularly noteworthy is the outstanding quality of the discussions we had throughout the week. We connected with precisely the experts and decision-makers we were aiming to meet at bauma. And last but not least, we signed several very attractive contracts right there at the fair. In short: bauma 2022 far exceeded our expectations.”

Patrick Top, Director Sales and Marketing, HCME

“Although this year’s bauma was postponed by six months, many dealers and customers of Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) were looking forward to the event after the restrictions everyone had to contend with over the past two years. From the very first day, the anticipation was palpable, as we were able to have many fruitful discussions with our visitors at the HCME stand.”.

As always, bauma is a great opportunity to gain valuable insights into market developments. This year, we were able to present our new models at the trade fair, including a range of electric machines and – perhaps more importantly – systems that contribute to improved safety and productivity on construction sites. All in all, the trade fair was worthwhile, providing an opportunity to reconnect with our valued partners and customers and not only to celebrate 50 years of success in Europe, but also to look ahead to shaping a more advanced, safer, and more sustainable future together

Tim Whiteman, Global Branding Director, Business Development, Sinoboom

“Sinoboom was thrilled by the diversity of trade visitors at bauma. Our all-electric aerial work platform range generated great interest among trade delegations, customers, and visitors from Germany and abroad, and sparked many discussions. We were delighted to have tripled our booth space compared to the last bauma and are already looking forward to the next one!”
