Globally, eSports is on its way to becoming a billion-dollar business. In Germany, the German Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) believes professionalized gaming is already on its way to becoming a mainstream sport. "But not only is the professional eSports sector growing; more and more sports groups are also emerging at universities and local clubs in Germany," the BIU stated in a press release . Survey data published by the BIU show that awareness of eSports is increasing. 29 percent of online users are now familiar with the term – and among 16- to 24-year-olds, more than half are even familiar with the digital sport.

You can make good money with eSports. The highest-dollar tournaments pay out prize money in the double-digit million range. According to Newzoo, viewers watched Fortnite games (LoL) on Twitch for a total of 124.7 million hours in June 2018. The former is a live streaming video portal primarily used to broadcast video games, the latter an online co-op survival game. However, the eSports portion of Fortnite is in the homeopathic range. This is different with Dota 2 and Counter Strike. Here, around half of the viewing hours are spent on professional eSports streams.
