According to an IDC estimate , artificial intelligence (AI) applications will generate approximately $50 billion in revenue in 2020. As the graphic shows, the market volume is expected to more than double by 2024. “Companies will adopt AI—not just because they can, but because they have to,” says Ritu Jyoti of IDC. He continues, “AI is the technology that helps companies be agile, innovative, and scalable.” Currently, four of the most common application areas are related to sales or cyber threat defense. Customer service automation—primarily referring to chatbots—currently leads the market with 11.3 percent of the total volume. This is followed by sales process automation and automated threat detection and mitigation.

This is followed by the automation of sales processes and the automated detection and defense of threats.
