In logistics consulting, people still talk about trend topics when it comes to automation, digitalization and energy solutions ( see Willenbrock ). This is actually astonishing, as these are elementary and trend-setting decisions if you want to assert yourself and develop in the market.

'Smart logistics consulting' or 'Logistics consulting 4.0' would certainly be a better term to describe these topics

include. The current logistics are at the end of a development stage with the step to the next higher level. This also includes new storage concepts and strategies. With unified commerce, the boundaries between warehouse, sales and sales shelves are lost. This is how you could describe it briefly and succinctly. With autonomous power supply, driven by the EU's emission-free policy, further opportunities and possibilities are opening up. But there are also risks that must be taken into account accordingly.

Only smart logistics consulting or logistics consulting 4.0 can meet current market needs

Automation is only part of the solution. The global markets are also constantly changing. A fixed strategy and long-term logistical planning is not possible without modular and flexible agitation models.

Micro-Fulfillment – Crises rarely come alone

Micro-Fulfillment – Crises rarely come alone – Image: Victor Runov|Shutterstock.com

Most of the time, major crises don't just come out of the blue. There are harbingers, ominous developments and missed opportunities to give in in time. It is usually due to the complexity of the context that the inevitable happens: the economic crisis or when another bubble bursts. The Western world has been spared from major accidents and catastrophes since World War II. Brexit itself was considered manageable without the EU falling into major difficulties.

This changed suddenly with the corona pandemic. Existing problems and bottlenecks were particularly noticeable in logistics. Supply chains were interrupted and supplies to the population could only be maintained with emergency logistical solutions. For shipping logistics, 2020 was almost a year-round volume of work like usual at Christmas.

It's slowly becoming clear to everyone that the current situation is not a temporary one. That the changes that have already taken place will be permanent and will become the standard.

Courier, express and parcel shipments in Germany

Courier, express and parcel industry in Germany – Image: alphaspirit|Shutterstock.com

Sales in the courier, express and parcel industry in Germany rose steadily between 2009 and 2019, which is mainly due to the boom in online trading. In 2019, the turnover of the CEP industry in Germany was around 21.3 billion euros. In the CEP end customer market in Germany, Deutsche Post DHL had the highest share of sales in the 2017/2018 financial year at 69 percent.

Almost 513,000 people were employed in the CEP industry in Germany in 2019. This was almost 200,000 more employees than in 2002. The total income of employees also rose sharply by 2019, from almost 7.7 billion euros in 2002 to almost 18.3 billion euros in 2019.

The number of shipments delivered has been growing continuously since 2010: In 2019, almost 3.7 billion shipments were sent. Germany is one of the countries where a comparatively large number of packages are sent per person per year. According to a forecast, slightly fewer parcels will be sent in 2020 due to the Corona crisis.

Europe & USA: Last mile market, courier, express and parcel shipments

Since early human civilizations, people have had to transport objects from one place to another. The growth in economic performance and industrial specialization led to the establishment of larger transport routes. Better use of technology with advances in science allowed us to deliver to multiple locations much faster with less effort. The logistics industry connects the business world, and this connection is evolving in response to the changing needs of the market.

The emergence of the market for courier, express and parcel services (CEP) is an example of developments in the logistics industry. Changing customer needs and the dynamics of the global economy pushed the logistics market to respond with changes to create new opportunities. One of the market needs was the demand for a faster, better and safer way to transport both industrial goods to facilitate industrial production and consumer goods to satisfy the desires of customers around the world.

Simply put, the CEP market offers traditional postal services faster and more reliably.

E-commerce and warehouse logistics – growth engine and challenge

E-commerce and warehouse logistics – Image: vectorfusionart|Shutterstock.com

The current picture of the retail industry is characterized by massive changes, because as consumers become increasingly digitally connected, they are changing their shopping behavior more and more. They are increasingly ordering via PC or mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones instead of purchasing the goods in brick-and-mortar stores. Last year, e-commerce sales in Germany amounted to almost €34 billion. And this is just the beginning, because online retail is predicted to continue to grow strongly in the coming years.

The high dynamics of e-commerce places completely new demands on logistics. On the one hand, this applies to the courier, express and parcel services (CEP) market with the processing of shipping and returns. On the other hand, however, this applies to intralogistics, which deals with the storage, transport and picking of goods. Due to high competitive pressure and low margins, more and more providers are trying to make their cost situation more efficient and at the same time optimize the delivery time factor, which is critical to success.

Plan solar systems with photovoltaic solutions for freight forwarding and contract logistics

Plan solar systems with photovoltaic solutions for freight forwarding and contract logistics

The EU's Green Deal is the heart of the new climate protection law and drives developments and measures forward. In some federal states there are already legal provisions for new logistics buildings with photovoltaics mandatory. The solar system requirement for existing logistics buildings and logistics centers will follow. The first announcements about this have already been made in politics, because the EU wants to be the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050.

What will be crucial for the future will be how we continue to secure the infrastructure of our key industry! Key industries in Germany today include the automotive industry, construction industry, food, chemical industry, electrical industry, energy production, mechanical engineering and shipyards.

The Corona pandemic in particular has shown that the functioning supply chain management of trade and industry is particularly thanks to the logistical mastery of forwarding companies and contract logistics. The fact that there were “only” shortages like in the “toilet paper crisis” will remain just a humorous side note in the future.

E-Commerce: New ways in online grocery shopping

The e-grocery industry needs individual logistics concepts – @adobe | Piman Khrutmuang

Online shopping has long been part of everyday life. The Germans are still cautious in only one area: food and beverages only make up a small share of e-commerce. It won't stay that way.

With a peak value of 11.5 percent purchasing volume, the Germans are European champions in online shopping. Most popular: clothing, books and shoes. Shopping over the Internet has long been part of everyday life for the majority of our population. The Germans are still cautious in only one area: food and beverages only make up an extremely small share of e-commerce. But it won't stay that way. The food trade of the future will continue to develop – and with it logistics.
