XL solar parks in Brandenburg: Key projects for a sustainable future

From Neuruppin, Vierlinden (Görlsdorf) to Ketzin: Brandenburg is driving the energy transition with gigantic solar parks

The energy transition in Brandenburg takes concrete forms with several major projects in the area of solar energy. Three important projects stand out: a 100-hectare solar park on the A24 near Neuruppin, a 91-hectare project in Vierlinden and the first German solar park of the Portuguese energy group EDP in Ketzin. These projects illustrate Brandenburg's growing importance as a location for large -scale photovoltaic systems and make an important contribution to the energy transition.

100 hectares of solar park on the A24 near Neuruppin

The majority of the city councils of Neuruppin (Ostprignitz-Ruppin) decided in December 2024 to change the land use plan to pave the way for a new solar park. The planned photovoltaic system is to reach an impressive size of around 100 hectares, which corresponds to about 140 soccer fields and extend to the east of the Stöffin district along the Autobahn 24.

The project is divided into two areas: for a 30 hectare section that borders directly on the highway and is considered a privileged area for the construction of solar parks, the investor has already received a building permit from the district. This part is about 200 meters wide. For the larger part with 74 hectares and a width of over 350 meters, the city council has now initiated the changes to the land use and development plans.

As a potential investor, we called a subsidiary of the largest German agricultural dealer in a Maz-Online news report . However, there are uncertainties due to financial difficulties by the parent company. According to the research, it can only be Baywa AG and Baywa Re AG (Baywa Renewable Energy).

Timetable and economic importance

However, the start of construction of the solar park is to be expected at the earliest in 2027, and operational readiness is not expected before 2028. The city of Neuruppin hopes for additional income through this project. With a forecast performance of up to 120 megawatts, the solar park could rinse up to 240,000 euros annually to the city treasury.

In Neuruppin there are already further experiences with solar energy. The A24 Energie, a local company, installed a 28 kWP photovoltaic system with an expandable lithium-ion memory system for the “Womena” living project on the Sonnenufer in Neuruppin on behalf of Stadtwerke Neuruppin.

EnBW solar park in Vierlinden (Görlsdorf)

In the municipality of Vierlinden, Görlsdorf district in the Märkisch-Oderland district, the energy group EnBW builds the Solarpark “Am 4-Ruthen-Pfuhl Görlsdorf”. The system comprises a total of approximately 91 hectares, of which about 78 hectares are used directly for energy generation with photovoltaic modules. The solar park is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025.

Technical details and environmental benefits

This large -scale project is used around 142,500 solar modules, each with a specific output of around 610 to 615 watts. The system is expected to produce around 94 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year-enough to supply around 35,000 three-person households with environmentally friendly energy. This electricity generation can save around 67,600 tons of CO₂ annually.

The EnBW will run the park for 30 years. Concon GmbH was commissioned by EnBW to build the solar park, including tree management as well as mechanical and electrical installation.

Economic advantages for the community

A particular advantage for the municipality of Vierlinden lies in the financial grants. Thanks to the so-called “solar euro” in Brandenburg, the municipality can expect annual income of around 170,000 euros over the operating period of the park. Around 5 million euros will probably come together by the end of the term. In addition, there are trade tax revenue from the operation of the photovoltaic system.

The EnBW emphasizes that, unlike many other project developers, it not only plans and builds its systems, but also operates itself. For the coming decades, the company wants to remain present as a contact for the community and the local people.

EDP Solar Park in Ketzin-Premiere of a Portuguese energy group

The Portuguese energy group EDP has started building its first major project for renewable energies in Germany through its subsidiary Edp Renewables. The solar park is being built in Ketzin in the state of Brandenburg, west of Berlin.

Project partnership and technical data

The project was developed in collaboration with Kronos Solar EDPR, a German solar developer that EDP took over in 2022. The expertise of Kronos Solar enables EDP to set up a strong pipeline of solar projects for the coming years.

EDP Renewables (Edp Renováveis, SA - Madrid) is the subsidiary of the Portuguese Energy Group Energy de Portugal (EDP) and specializes in renewable energies, in particular wind energy and solar energy.

The Ketzin system has an installed power of 87 MWP and will probably produce around 91 GWH electricity per year after it is commissioned. This amount of energy is sufficient to supply more than 28,000 households in the region with electricity and at the same time avoid around 75,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.

Strategic importance for EDP Renewables

The commissioning of the solar park is planned for the second half of 2025. For EDP, the construction in Ketzin marks an important milestone and the first step of an ambitious growth plan for Germany. Duarte Bello, CEO of EDP for Europe, emphasizes: “With more than 5 GWP large solar projects in various stages of development until the end of the decade and with a committed team for wind energy and other renewable technologies, Germany becomes one of the most important markets for EDPS global ambitions.”

The short -term EDP projects in Germany focus on large solar systems with the aim of installing over 400 MWP over the next two years. In the long term, the company plans to expand and diversify its portfolio with wind power on land and battery storage. By 2030, EDP plans to contribute to new projects to the energy transition in Germany with over 1 GW.

The solar expansion in Brandenburg - opportunities and challenges

Brandenburg is increasingly developing into an important location for solar energy in Germany. The sunny conditions and the available areas make the state attractive for investors from home and abroad.

More solar projects in Brandenburg

In addition to the three large projects presented, there are other important solar parks in Brandenburg. In Lübben in the Spreewald, for example, the Groß Lubolz solar park was put into operation along the railway line with 14.5 megawatts. Around 26,000 solar modules were built on a twelve hectare area. The expected annual yield is around 15.5 million kilowatt hours, which corresponds to the annual needs of 4,875 average three-person households and saves around 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year compared to the German electricity mix.

Another example is the solar park in Karstädt, which Energiekontor AG sold to the CEE Group. With a total of around 19 MWP, this park will generate around 20 GWh of green electricity annually from the first full company year, which corresponds to the average annual electricity requirement of around 6,000 German households.

Financing models and economic advantages

The solar parks not only bring ecological, but also economic advantages for the location communities. With the “Solar-euro” in Brandenburg and through trade tax revenue, the municipalities benefit financially from the operation of the facilities. These additional income can be used for various municipal projects.

In addition, some operators such as enerparc offer the residents of financing participations with attractive interest rates, as examples from other regions show.

International investments make Brandenburg a energy hotspot

Brandenburg positions itself with several major projects as an important location for solar energy in Germany. The projects presented in Neuruppin, Vierlinden and Ketzin make a significant contribution to the energy transition and to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The investments of international groups such as EnBW and EDP underline the growing importance of Brandenburg as a location for renewable energies. With its commitment to Ketzin, the Portuguese energy group EDP makes it clear that Germany and Brandenburg in particular is a key market for its European investments.

Local added value through tax revenue and direct financial grants to the municipalities also strengthens the acceptance of the facilities among the population. The development shows that the expansion of renewable energies can combine ecological and economic advantages and thus make an important contribution to the sustainable development of the region.
