PIMAX Connect 2025: New tracking technologies for immense VR experiences

Hand tracking comes: Pimax improves high-end-VR

During the recently held Pimax Connect 2025 (May 12, 2025), the VR manufacturer Pimax announced significant progress in his tracking technologies. The focus is on the introduction of hand tracking for the Crystal series, which will significantly expand the interaction options for owners of these high-end-VR headsets. The function should be available in the third quarter of 2025 as a beta version for the Crystal Light, Crystal Super and Dream Air series. This announcement underlines Pimax 'continuous effort to technologically develop its virtual reality solutions.

Hand tracking for the Crystal series: Details and schedule

The integration of hand tracking into the Crystal series represents a significant expansion of the functionality of these PC-VR glasses. According to the official announcement, Pimax plans to introduce the hand tracking function in the third quarter of 2025 as a beta version for the Crystal Light and Crystal Super and for the Dream Air series. This technology promises to further improve interactivity and immersion in VR environments.

While the new integrated hand tracking function will only be available in 2025, Pimax already offers a separate hand-tracking module. This module can be attached to the underside of the crystal headsets and already enables hand tracking. The installation of this module requires attachment with screws to the headset and the connection via a USB Type-C cable. After connecting the headset to the PC, the Pitool software indicates a notification that hand tracking has been activated and offers a download link for the necessary driver.

However, some users report compatibility problems with certain software. A user in the DCS World Forum described difficulties when using the Pimax hand tracker with DCS, whereby the system did not recognize the connected device, although it worked correctly in the Pimax Home UI. This indicates that the current hand-tracking solution still has optimization-a problem that may be fixed with the upcoming integrated solution.

Technical basics of hand tracking

Pimax's current hand tracking module is based on Leapmotion IR170 technology, as can be seen from a Reddit contribution. The upcoming integrated solution is likely to be based on similar principles, whereby Pimax will probably make its own optimizations in order to improve accuracy and responsiveness.

The development of hand tracking is in accordance with Pimax 'progress in other tracking technologies, in particular the proprietary slam tracking (simultaneous localization and mapping). Unlike conventional base station tracking, which is dependent on infrared sensors and can be susceptible to covers and disorders, Pimax 'Slam technology uses four cameras to generate over a million tracking points, combined with inertia measurement for the highest precision.

Current developments in the Crystal series

In addition to the hand tracking announcement, Pimax also announced updates to the shipping dates and technical specifications of its crystal models.

Shipping dates and variants

The Crystal Super with a 50ppd look has been delivered since April, with Pimax plans to meet all pre-orders by June 2025. The version with the higher-quality 57PPD look is to follow in the second quarter of 2025.

The announcement of a micro-oled variant of the Crystal Super, which will be equipped with the same Sony panels as the Dream Air, is particularly interesting. The use of micro-Oled displays promises improved image quality with higher brightness, better contrasts and more lively colors.

60g Airlink module

For the third quarter of 2025, Pimax also announces the long-awaited 60G Airlink module. This wireless module for the VR glasses was originally supposed to appear for $ 299 in 2024, but has been postponed several times. The 60g Airlink module is intended to introduce wireless functions for the crystal series and offer seamless connectivity and improved compatibility across different platforms. This development is particularly important for users who want more freedom of movement in VR environments.

Extensions in the pimax portfolio: Dream Air series

The announcement of the hand tracking for the Crystal series coincides with other important product updates, in particular the introduction of the Dream Air SE and updates from the Dream Air series.

Dream Air and Dream Air SE

During the Connect 2025, Pimax presented news about the Dream Air series in addition to the updates to the Crystal series, including a new model: Dream Air SE. Both devices use micro-OLED displays and pancake lenses, with the SE version with 2560 x 2560 pixels per eye offering a lower resolution than the regular Dream Air (3840 × 3552 pixels).

Common features of the Dream Air models are integrated audio, slam tracking and hand tracking. Thanks to Tobii Eye-Tracking, both versions also support foveated rendering, which optimizes graphics performance. The Dream Air was presented as the “world's smallest 8K resolution VR headset” and offers comprehensive tracking functions, including eye tracking, inside-out tracking, hand tracking and controller support.

However, it should be noted that current prototypes of the Dream Air series still have restrictions. A hands-on report on Reddit points out that the tested prototypes do not yet have a functioning tracking, no controller or hand tracking and no customizable IPD. However, these functions should be included in the final version.

Pricing and availability

The Dream Air SE costs $ 1,199 in the SLAM version with inside-out tracking and controllers, while the Lighthouse version is available without a controller for $ 899. The regular Dream Air begins at $ 1,899 for the Lighthouse version and $ 2,199 for the SLAM version. The delivery of both models was postponed to the third quarter of 2025, which corresponds to the schedule for the introduction of hand tracking.

Pimax 'vision for the future of the VR

The announcement of hand tracking for the Crystal Super and Crystal Light underlines Pimax 'continuous commitment to expand the limits of VR technology. Due to the integration of advanced tracking technologies, improving the display quality and the development of wireless solutions, Pimax continues to position itself as a leading provider in the high-end VR segment.

For existing Crystal owners, the upcoming introduction of hand tracking means significant expansion of the functionality of your devices, while potential buyers now have another convincing reason to choose Pimax's premium VR solutions. With the simultaneous development of the Dream Air series and the 60g Airlink module, Pimax shows that the company strives to address different market segments and offer innovative solutions for different user preferences.

While we are waiting for the beta version of hand tracking in the third quarter of 2025, it remains to be seen how well the implementation will work and how seamlessly it can be integrated into existing VR applications. If Pimax can deliver the promised functions, this could be a significant step towards more natural and intuitive VR interactions.
