"Harry, get the car moving" – that was a much-quoted line from the 1970s television series Derrick. With cars becoming increasingly smart, the possibility of a car driving itself (or even driving itself) via voice command is becoming ever more attainable.

Even today, some car functions can be controlled by voice – for example, navigation and making a call. According to a recent survey by the research institute YouGov, 13 percent of Germans have already used this function, as the following graphic shows. Voice control is more widespread on smartphones: 36 percent of respondents use applications like Siri at least occasionally.

Overall, voice control remains a niche topic in Germany. More than half of those surveyed never use it.
