Record value due to the corona-related lockdown - in 2020, the savings rate of private households* in Germany was around 16.2 percent. The associated savings amounted to around 331 billion euros.

Disposable income of private households

The disposable income of private households corresponds to the income that is ultimately available to households after deducting direct taxes and social contributions. It can be used for consumption and savings purposes. At the end of 2020, the disposable income of private households in this country was around 1,983 billion euros. The majority of disposable income is used for consumption purposes. The unconsumed portion plus the increase in company pension entitlements represents the savings of private households. The saved portion of disposable income is referred to as the savings rate.

Savings products used

Private households have a variety of investment options available to invest their savings. However, many German citizens still use a savings book or account to invest money, despite the low interest rate. German savers prefer conservative forms of investment, even if their return is currently close to zero. Investment forms that are more prone to fluctuations, such as stocks, tend to be avoided. This can also be seen in the number of shareholders in Germany, which is still a long way from the record value achieved during the New Economy era in 2000. Germans' satisfaction with their finances is declining slightly - according to the 2020 wealth barometer from the German Savings Banks and Giro Association, around 42 percent of Germans rate their current financial situation as very good to good.
